Mystery part

Hi all,

My first post here, so please be kind!

I was engaging in some over exuberant pressure washing (engine bay and underside) of my Mk4 Golf 2.0 and this piece fell on to the ground. I suspect it is some sort of protector for a gearshift linkage or similar but I can't quite work it out. Can anyone tell me where it goes? Something obvious no doubt.

It's a protective cap off the top of the starter motor ��

Thanks beale187! I am guessing it is for the large nut that connects the battery cable. Yes my suspicion that it is something that should have been obvious was correct .
