Should have bought a dipstick while you were there ...
I was checking my oil today and while putting my dipstick back the orange pipe shattered. Panic ensued, but a quick search on the net revealed that it's a common problem that I'm sure most of you are aware of.
I rang up the closest VW dealer (Underwood) and they put me through to spare parts, who quoted me $18 bucks for a replacement pipe. Jumped in the car and drove over to the dealership cos that's where I thought I had to go to pick it up, but was told it was actually around the corner.
I then asked the guy at VW if anyone would be able to help me install it cos I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. He says to me:
"Oooh..would have to book you in for that one, it's a pretty big job".
So I asked how much, and he says:
"$50 - $60 for a replacement part, an hour of labour at least...about $200 total mate."
I couldn't believe it! I mentioned that I was quoted $20 bucks for the part, and he replies with "Oh is that how much they are? Ok then..$170". I said thanks, and left.
Went around the corner to the spare parts area and picked up a replacement pipe for $18 bucks. I took one look at the design and knew it wouldn't be a big job, so I headed back and jumped back on the net. Once my engine cooled down I set about replacing the part. It pretty much went like this:
1. Engine covers off, bracket off
2. Dipstick out
3. Jammed some paper down the old tube so any bits that break off wouldn't fall down there. Pulled the old tube out.
4. Installed new pipe by pushing it in, gave everything a quick clean and then brackets, covers, and dipstick back in.
Took me 30 minutes, and I'm a complete noob. This was the first time I've ever fixed anything in a car, so I was a bit nervous to start but found it very enjoyable and rewarding.
That dude looked me in the eye and lied right to my face. How do these people sleep at night? Scumbags.

dealers make most of their money from servicing. they can tell most people any price and they will accept it. they also try to do things that don't need to be done.
