Sorry to bump an old thread, but while waiting for the Chiro today I saw this article in the magazine. They weren't too flattering on the poor old Mk IV.

Perhaps I'm being a little too brand loyal, but to say (and I quote) "the 1.8 turbo was never a good engine" kinda grates a little.

Mind you, in the same issue was an article titled "The 10 best cars of the last decade". Not sure how many folks would class both the HSV Commodore AND the Falcon XR6 as one of the best ten cars of the last decade, but they did.

You have to remember, they're looking at it as a stock car - and when compared to previous (and later) generations of Golf GTIs, the stock Mk4 GTI was a bit of a dog.

Totally different story with a good tune. And I don't know that VW have equaled the interior quality before or since...

Oh absolutely, and they made mention of the quality of the interior in the IV. But the 1.8 a bad engine??

And I still hold my position over the ten best cars!

Nothing to write home about, particularly when you compare its 110kW/210Nm of torque with its porky ~1300kgs kerb mass (before fuel, driver, etc), and the fact that a ~$1000 reflash can achieve 140+kw and 300+Nm without any physical changes...

Even cheapish new camera are starting to get up there as the mega pixel count increases. My wifes DSLR's shots vary between about 5 and 10mb depending on complexity of the image and it's "only" 15.1MP... The high end Canon 1Ds (which is worth more than my car) is 22.1MP, photo's can be up to 25mb
