MKIV GTI has developed a miss

Hey guys,

I just noticed today that when I accelerate sometimes the MKIV seems to hesitate and jerk a little before returning to normal. I've noticed it mostly around 80km/h and 100km/h - in all gears and revs from about 2,200rpm-4,500rpm.

My initial thoughts are the leads or plugs are due for replacing but what are your thoughts? I'm hoping it's nothing more. Whilst on the topic, can VAGCOM detect these types of faults? I have already priced a set of NGK Platinum plugs from MJM Auto Haus for $49.95 which seems reasonable. I haven't seen any leads - what's recommended?

Are the plugs and leads easy to replace in a MKIV Golf GTI?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

You don't have ignition leads mate. There is a coil pack above each plug. You need an allen key to lift the coil pack, as well as a narrow plug socket.

VAG-COM has a good chance of picking up a fault depending on what it is.

I would have it scanned before fitting any spare part to the car. If you replace bits, before scanning you'll not be 100% that you have cleared a snag.

I will definitely get it checked out before replacing parts, but was just after some ideas of what it might be.

i had a misfire develop about 2 weeks ago.... but mine was noticable from idle , ie huge power loss and lots of stuttering.

From memory, Gavin did suggest dead coilpack, so I took it to my local vw dealership and the Tech hooked it up and confirmed that it was a failed coilpack.

I have since ordered 6 new coilspacks and 6 NGK sparkplugs from ECS Tuning.

yeah, started from $70 but I added 6 plugs and a maf and and freight went as little over $100

I think I am going to replace the coils anyway. It has gotten worse in the past couple of days so I'm not driving it until I get it fixed up.

Can someone tell me what VW charge for a coil? Should I buy genuine or check out Bursons? Also, should I change the plugs at the same time?

Have you eliminated the fuel pump as a problem, or something else in the fuel system like a pump relay or clogged filter?

I'd be inclined to check that before buying new coil packs - how would you feel if you did that and the car was the same afterwards

I would suggest, like others have before, to get a vag com checked over it first. That will tell you if there are any errors being thrown up.

What part of Melbourne are you in? I have one in Blackburn if you want it looked over. Any VW specialist would be happy to look at any codes. I can recommend James at Audvolks in Clayton who I use a lot, but i'm sure there are lots of great guys around.
