MKIV Golf 2.0 Sport chewing through fuel

    Hi,

I have a MKIV Golf 2.0 Sport and have no end of trouble with excess fuel consumption. At idle when running normally it uses around 1.0L per hour. At the moment it is using anywhere between 2-3L per hour and you can smell the fuel coming out the exhaust. Idle is rough also.

I have had it checked a number of times and every time it comes back from the service running great and then a couple of months later for no reason it will start again....

I have replaced the coolant temp sensor and ignition leads but no joy. next step is to potentially replace Mass Air Flow sensor, even though no error is being reported.

    Any help?

could be your fuel pressure regulator, MAF, air filter blocked. thermostat or stepper motor in your throttle body as well...

drop me a PM if you require a MAF. (2003 sport)

don't forget O2 sensor, been known to send fuel usage through the roof when they go bad.

Thanks guys....I'm guessing it must be something that is getting blocked/dirty like MAF or air filter as it runs well after services then over time will just start running rich and just stay that way.

Tek199 - i'll check the MAF and get in touch if need be.

I'd go with the O2 sensor as its a common problem with G4s.
