*There is not much adjustment at all but keep in mind if you're poking 6mm more on one side, you need to half it for the center!

I happened to do this on the weekend as well. It was required for me to go lower because of my wheel offset and limited tyre stretch (1 size under, 215/40/r18 on 18x8 )
You first want to calculate how far you need to shift the beam while the car is on the ground!
I knew that my right wheel was poking around 5mm more then my left wheel, so my calculation was
5mm more 'poke' on one side, center is 5/2=2.5
So I needed to move the beam around 2.5mm to make it look normal.
Here's a picture of your rear beam, the red dots indicate the 8 bolts you will need to loosen to move the beam over.

Obviously you want to jack your car up and place it on stands at the back and make sure everything is secure before crawling under the car. You'll also want to take your rear wheels off
Once I loosened one side, the bracket and beam actually pushed forward towards the front of the car*
You want to grab a rubber mallet and wack the side thats poking more, it won't take much to move it over, you SHOULD be able to clearly see the washer marks on the bracket, I used these marks as a guide for correction. (The MK3 version has some pictures with these marks on the bracket for reference)
*Now, if your bracket did happen to push forwards like mine did {it was only around 2mm but still} (you will again be able to tell by looking at the washer marks on the bracket). You want to correct this, otherwise your beam could be
a) lob sided
b) pushed forward towards the inner guard more, which if your golf/bora is low, you certainly don't want this!
What I done was push the beam across first, THEN I nipped the bolts up to be just enough to grip
After I nipped the bolts up, I hit the bracket that pushed forward with my mallet and placed it back to it's original vertical? placement.
I just tightened them fairly tight, my bolts were fairly easy to take off, not a great force required.
I ended up pushing mine across this far, there's no ruler but it's average texta size.
I placed a piece of pine flat on my hub and marked it on the ground, but remember the washer marks on the bracket is your best measurement! The picture should actually be flipped 180 degrees but you will get the idea as this was my left side.
