MK4 Shifter Bush ID

Ive spent the last few months trawling the internet trying to find a replacement bushing ( or a photo so I can make one) for the bottom of the shifter in my 00' MK4 1.6. Pretty much every search points to a different style of shifter than mine. The part number (de1j0711149) on the shifter brings up a bunch of references to a MK4 1.4 APE on German websites offering used shifters.

The shifter can't be pulled apart, pretty much a solid unit. Bushing can be accessed from underneath with the exhaust and heat shield removed.

Anyone have any info on this?


Didn't take a photo but the bottom of the shifter looks something like this. Scale is wrong though.

The prefix "DE" is the country code for Germany and is not a prefix for the part no.
So the part no is actually "1J0 711 149" Even still don't think that really helps, do you have the gearbox code?

The diagram above looks like it's the shaft bushing. Try searching for part no. 1J0711555B and see if an image of that looks the same as yours. Most MK4's will be the same (1.6, 2.0, GTI etc..) some of the earlier MK4's are closer to MK3 bushings.

Redrawn to scale (its a slow day at work). When I pulled it apart there was a bit that looked like 1J0711555B. But this is loose in the hole. 6 or 8mm bolt, the spacer took it out to maybe 10mm. The hole in the shifter is closer to 30mm. The end of the linkage has about 10mm gap on each side of the bottom of the shifter when bolted in. Although my memory isn't perfect, I pulled it apart 3 months ago.






This looks like the correct shifter and references 1J0711555B. Is there a bushing that goes around this part when its assembled? Or is it supposed to wear directly on the shifter itself? The diagram doesn't seem to show one.

Might go back to basics for a moment. Is the issue that you can't get into gear? If so what gear are you starting from and go to when you notice the issue?

If for example you put into 1st, when the shifter is engaged is there a lot of moment in the knob (hehe)?

Couldn't get it into first. Hits the stop for reverse before it was far enough over. It had lots of play in the shifter even when in gear. All the play was coming from where the linkage attaches to the bottom of the shifter. I have pressed a poly bush onto the spacer that was in it. That removed all the slop in the stick and I can now get first. However it is really tight to move, the bush is probably the wrong shape.
