    mk4 service

Hi all.My 02 GTI 93k is about due a service.Any recommendations for a decent (not rip off) mechanic around mona vale area.Just had it Revo,d and don,t want VW people playing with ecu.Car running well but oil is low and black.Would I just get away with doing the 4.5 ltr oil/filter change myself and leave it at that?
Hey and while I got ya.Plugs.Now that car is flashed do I change them or leave the originals if all is well.
    Cheers

European Autotech on Polo St, Mona Vale... Had my car there a couple of times for work, and they are quite good.

Standard plugs are OK with a stage 1 flash. I just change the oil on my cars usually, I keep my eye on all the other bits that wear out in between anyway.

European Autotech will be able to look after you for sure. They're an APR dealership if memory serves, but they won't hold your choice of another flash tune against you.

It really depends on what has been serviced previously, if car is running fine then usually it's ok.

Oil and filter is a must but you might want to look at air filter, fuel filter depending on when they were changed. Timing belt might be due for change if never been change (90K/4 yr if it's the same as the A3). Plugs I think are 100k item.

Personally I reckon it's a good idea to renew air/fuel filter and plugs just to get the best out of your REVO tune

Like Gaven said, just keep an eye out for the wear and tear items. It'll be even better if you have access to a VAGCOM or diagnostic cable just for more detail.

Oh, also, might want to look at bleeding your brake fluid if it hasn't been done for 2 yrs or more, especially with the REVO flash

Good info as usual.Changed oil myself today.5w40 nulon synthetic and just a ryco oil filter.Saw how deeply recessed plugs were so left them for now as car seems to be running fine.Didn,t check fuel or air filters but will locate and inspect. Is air filter easy to get to and what about those green cotton everyone raves about?.Brakes bled last service and timing belt done in 08 by previous owner.
Any tricks with tension for plugs when screwing in newies? And suggestions for brand and gap if I replace
I,ll definately be interested to vag com to see what kind of boost my new revo is requesting as i,ve set my revo to performance mode 1 which is the lower quality fuel setting as I assumed it would use less boost and look after the ko3
Prob should have started a new post but as usual I appreciate all the advice being offered.
    Great site!

Plugs should be done up tight, but not too tight... They can crack if over tightened...

You are thinking of the Piper Cross air filter http://www.pipercross.net/panelfilters/applications.asp

They are much like the K&N filters. The air filter is in the big black box on the left side of the engine bay, and should be only screwed in with philips head screws...

K&N is largely a wank. You get bugger all extra flow over an OEM paper filter, and have to deal with the oil, cleaning it, etc (over-oil it and you'll ruin your MAF, etc).

Incidently, more flow means larger holes in the filter (there's no getting away from this), and larger holes in the filter means it's not a filter, meaning you'll get more small particles making it through and into your engine (or worse, into your turbo).

    Yes, I agree.

This is the filter from VT V6 Commodore second picture is filter placed against the sky, so you can see the holes in the filtering media.
