IF you don't have a race engine don't waste money on a race belt.

I did my own timing belt and pump. I had soooo much trouble just getting the belt to slide onto the pulleys let alone before I pulled the tensioner pin to go tight...

Happened to be talking timing belt on the MK4 GTi with mechanic this morning and he was talking about changing the tensioner at the same time. The oilway/galley to the tensioner and seal around it is a weakness often overlooked and the tensioner can be a bigger issue than the belt causing failure. Showed me a 1.8 block he keeps for demonstration and the oil galley is quite small.
    Just sayin

There's no engine oil to feed the tensioner for the belt. He is possibly taking about the cam chain tensioner in the head?

You can get aftermarket kits that get away with the hydraulic tensioner and instead replace it with a 'allen key tensioner' like mk5
gtis. Hydraulic tensioner nowadays is too much hit and miss..
