McDub, have you or the previous owner (if there was one) fitted an aftermarket rear swaybar? The MkIV golfs, bar the R32 did not come with a factory rear sway bar, only the front.

That is why im confused when you're saying that your rear sway bar bushes need replacing.

Look at the following images. If you look under the back of your car, do you see anything that looks like the sway bars in the pics?

    Neuspeed

    Whiteline

The last is the same as my Whiteline one.

    Or is it like this?

You may be mistaking it for the rear axle mount bushings, these will wear out and squeek..... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1980960

What Gavs is saying is correct, you will have to measure the rear bar yourself as the GTI didn't come with a rear bar from the factory so no-one here can give you that answer. It could be anything, 25mm, 28mm, 30mm, 32mm etc. depending on what make/size aftermarket bar a previous owner has fitted.

If you don't have Verniers just use a decent sized shifter to gauge the bar then check the shifter opening with a ruler.

ahh ok so the GTI doesn't have one. i'm pretty sure when i casually mentioned the squeaking to seb, he said it would be the bushings in the rear sway bar. perhaps he thought i said a squeak in the front, or one of us was just mistaken.
hmmmm so i guess i might consider getting one then!
    (i purchased the car stock)

and so the squeak is possibly the rear axle bushing hey... think i'll let that slide for now... it's only a minor creaking sound. oh yeah it's more of a creaking sound rather than a squeaking sound...

sway bars... so where's some good places to get them locally? (cos ordering them off ecs tuning would cost an arm and a leg for shipping!)

Only option is to provide a URL to the image.
I believe our friendly admin guys has disabled the attachment feature of this site. You need to upload them to photobucket or similar and then put the image url link. I don't mind doing that if you send me the pic

    Hey mate,

I tried to get it today and for the 22mm adj blade type it came to around $250 delivered. Which shop did you go through and did you get a trade discount?
