what about buying a bigger turbo?
Bigger turbo will costs more than your $1200, and isn't needed to get close to 50% extra power/torque over standard. Best bang for your buck will be as fuzion stated.

Plenty of workshops around - what area of Sydney are you in? Did you mention Parramatta because it's close?
    Nothing to see here...

would i be wrong to assume that after a while the standard cat will start to clog up, so by putting in a hi flow cat (and downpipe...) will be beneficial, not neccesarily because it is slightly less restrictive than a stock cat, but because it's simply new and not blocked?
I'm only wondering this because a mate was driving behind me the other day and thought my exhaust sound was very airy, like it was retricted...
Airy? My car sounds like a rocket on throttle/boost. You have to remember firstly most people compare it to their "turbo" experiences which usually is a japanese car. I make a consistent 140-144 at the wheels with a 3" downpipe and remus exhaust (no high flow cat) setup (plus other bits of course).
Never believe everything you hear Save your pennies!

    Chips (and vw specialists)

    Unitronic - Euro Automotive (Giraween)
    GIAC - Exoticar's (Parramatta)
    Jade Auto Repair (Rosebery)
APR - European Autotek (Mona Vale)

otherwise vw/audi specialists above listed as well.

    Chip should be under $1100.

impressive. but yeah of course yours would sound different with an aftermarket exhaust! wonder if its the muffler that might be blocked...
The only reason i sort of think he could be right, is that when i was shopping for my car, the one i got actually sounded like it had a quieter exhaust, but hard to say for sure. But my car boosts well so that suggests there's no significant restrictions?
think i'll prob just go a 2.5" downpipe, no time soon though.

For the tune: You are best picking a brand of tune after doing some research as to which one is right for you (quality, price, support, etc).

Bigger Turbo (K04, etc) Will set you back a bit as the install often requires other components on top of the turbo (eg, injectors, MAF, Fuel Reg,) plus install and ECU. If your budget is $1200, that will get you a reasonably priced tune with a little to spare.

Dump pipe can help the car along, but not really required without the tune.

IMO (Don't have a Mk4, but similar engine) the tune and a look at the air intake setup is your best investment. Getting lots of cold air in can be a cheap way to make sure your turbo is not being choked with the new found power. Once you have chipped it, you may find you want to look at the traction / handling, so I'd chip it and see what you want to do from there...

The intake on the mk4 is much less restrictive then the polo's firstly, so i wouldnt worry 'as much'. If you dont want a "intake" as such you can do a CAI to your stock airbox (as effective for a chipped mk4). (here: http://bambergvr6.50megs.com/stock_airbox_cai.htm) Stock filter is fine, or change to a bmc or pipercross "DRY" filter, not an K&N!.

Chip + N75J or H Valve & Diverter (as an oem one is probably already leaking as they are pretty ****e on the MK4's) and theres your $1200 basically gone.

Follow Downpipe, Turbo Inlet Pipe (Forge or a-like), and with all that you should be the 120-130 mark at the wheels.

Also on K04 the mk4 gearboxes wont like it that
much so you will need a LSD as well! K04 installed complete is $3-4+ and gearbox.

I'll just add that my Revo flash was around the $1260 mark at Peak Performance too.
