Angry MK4 GTI Dodgy Petrol Gauge

The petrol gauge is acting up.
Monday evening I filled the tank up with 98 Octane. After driving the car numerous times the petrol gauge is stuck on full.
When i got the car i filled it to the brim and never had this problem, this is the second time I've filled it to the brim and now the gauge doesn't like me.
When I turn the car off it goes to the bottom, so that works fine.
Today i was driving and was stuck on a hill with traffic and the gauge went to below the top line, as i drove off on level ground it went back up to full.
I even boosted a fair bit to see if the gauge would move but nothing.
    Hitting the dash did nothing.

Has this happened to anyone else?
Or how could this be fixed? As i would like to know how much petrol is in my car.

    Thanks

Sounds like the fuel sender unit is busted.

You'll have to remove your rear seats to get to it.

I believe that the fuel sender unit is separate from the fuel pump and if I'm correct you'll be able to just replace the FSU.

    Hey Mate,

    you should try the following:

1 Disconnect the postive and negative cables on the battery
2 Bridge the cables for ten seconds
3 reconnect the cables on the battery

Doing this will reset your instrument cluster, sometimes this is enough to do the trick.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers Richard.

The gauge slightly works now. It moved down a little bit, but it should be lower. Ill have a look and get a new one i suppose.

I can get up to about 130kms before mine moves at all depending on how I drive haha, to the OP just give it a little bit of time and just see if it drops
