    Mk4 GTI daily build

    Hey all,

I just got a 2002 Mk4 Golf Gti and am after some advice on which way to go with it in terms of parts and tune etc. I'm not after a world beater just a fun daily driver. At the moment i'm thinking i'm going to get a set of coilovers, have it chipped and tuned and possibly some wheel spacers to get the stock wheels to fill the guards a little better. Bang for buck is the name of the game. So:

In regards to coilovers does anyone have any recommendations? I've seen some sets on ebay fairly cheap but i'm not opposed to buying second hand. Do second hand coilovers pop up every now and then or are they like hens teeth?

What chip and tune are people running and whats the average cost? i'm after cheap power so this seems like the way to go.

Lastly, any other cheap mods that people would recommend? airbox mods, cold air intake etc.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum.

I can do you a Phase 1 tune for $749.

MK4 Golf GTI and 8L A3 Turbo with ME3.8 ECU. No ECU's opened during this tune up

You can send me the ECU and I can flash it on the bench.

You get it back 2 days after you send it, so you're off the road for 2 nights.

Not much extra gain from intakes TBH. Make sure you do something about the heatsink for the ignition control module. If you fit an intake.

I'd change all the vacuum lines, they are usually crap after 10 years. The DV is the other normal failure point. A million opinions on that which I'll leave you to research those.

Hi mate - and welcome. Might see you around Newcastle sometime, ive got a modified white Mk6 GTI.

For tuning the 1.8T 20 valve engine, it seems you would be crazy to use anyone other than Gavin from Custom Code. Just about every man and his dog on this forum with that engine is tuned with Custom Code. Gavin is a member on this forum.

As for suspension, personally im not into buying used performance suspension as you never quite know what you are getting. I would prefer to pay a little more and buy new.....but each to their own.

Gav is def the person I would talk to for a tune!
I have a 2003 mk4 GTI with a K03s and 3" down pipe, pod filter, 4 bar Fuel Reg and a stage 2 custom code tune. it makes me smile all the way to and from work

the biggest problem with lowering the mk4 is the swaybar will smash the drive shafts or visa versa. my tyres are 2 finger widths below my guards and the swaybar hits all the time on large bumps or even when doing full lock turns in culdesacs/carparks .
this can be fixed with an aftermarket front swaybar. but also look at putting a rear one on as well.

I would recommend the FK coilovers you can get from V-Tech Australia. they are $500 shipped from memory?
but if you can stretch go for some KW V1 coilovers as they are a better quality unit but at $1500 or so. its a big difference in cost.

    good luck
they are a GREAT car for the money!
