MK4 Golf auto stuck in "P"

The brake release switch doesn't seem to be activating thus I'm unable to place the car in Drive or even move the gear selector, anyone know where the brake switch gear release is located?

2 mates of mine have had this happen to them. In both cases it was due to brake/tail lights being blown.

Just a thought.

There is a sensor on the pedal arm, up above the pedal itself, almost under the dash. They're known to fail.
