    MK4 Bora exhaust.

    Hi,

I have just recently bought a 2001 v6 bora. The previous owner fitted an aftermarket exhaust (no idea which make) and whenever I'm accelerating from low revs (eg. accelerating from 60km in 6th) it makes a unpleasant resonating sound in the cabin.
Can anyone recommend a fix? I'm guessing new exhaust tips may fix it but I would appreciate some help before i go out spending money.
    Thanks in advance

Check to see if there's a centre resonator (about half-way down the length of the car, you're looking for a long "hot-dog" style muffler). If not (and it's not uncommon for there not to be one in aftermarket exhausts), that's probably the issue, and putting one in will likely help (albeit the exhaust will be quieter over all - but there's no such thing as a free lunch).

Exhaust tips are mostly for show, they contribute very little to the sound levels or characteristics of an exhaust system

In the end, if you go to a reputable exhaust place, they'll know what to do to fix it.
    Nothing to see here...

Just wondering why you're already in 6th at 60km/h?

I just wanna know does it sound good from outside of the car when revving higher?

I do this regularly - the V6 engine really is quite tractable.

It may - but that doesn't solve the owner's issue of the unpleasant resonation...

Ahh ok if you say so, I've never tried it as I thought I'd be lugging it.. I'll try it tonight.

The in cabin noise and vibration when I accelerate with the revs too low is bad enough with a stock exhaust. I guess I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum with a heavy foot and still in 2nd or 3rd when passing 60km/h.

I was asking him the question just for my own research on aftermarket exhausts, not to try and solve his issue.

Not on all roads under all conditions of course - but a relatively flat road, you should be OK on. I often shift 1-2-3-4 and then shortshift to 6th when in general traffic.

Not sure what you're doing wrong to get bad noises with a stock exhaust - the V6 is smooth under almost all conditions...

Fair enough. Different after-market exhausts will behave differently. If you get your exhaust built by a reputable shop, you should be fine. Of course, you need to realise that there's not a lot of benefit to going stupidly big on the V6 engine - a 3" exhaust would be a complete waste of time and money.

The exhaust sounds great from outside at any revs, its just inside that you notice the resonating. Its only once in a while when im a little short on fuel driving efficiently, going up a slight hill on something when you just need that little increase of power to hold the same speed. I must admit I usually just gear down n floor it

If I'm in a cruisy mood, I'll be in 6th by then too, skipping gears along the way (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 6). In traffic sometimes I'll still be in 6th as low as 50kph. There's no shuddering or grumbling from the engine, just dont expect much to happen right away if you floor it.
