Hi
I wouldn't be certain but I doubt the 2.0l and the 1.6l would have the same box
Hey guys,
As title im just asking if the 2.0 L 5 speed transmission is the same as the dreaded DUU in the 1.6L 5 speed models?
I dont have access to a 2.0 L otherwise id obviously check myself and i have searched finding mostly info on the DUU boxes with the rivet failures.
My mate is keen on a MK4 and i dont want him buying it if its the same box with the known issues.
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
Cheers.

My Mk IV 1.8T GTI has a gearbox code EVS. I doubt the 1.6L/2.0L would share the same box either

hey g0harvey,
i've got a 2.0L. I can tell you what it is if you know where to look ?
1.8L, 2.0L, 2.0T got the 02J gearbox, the 1.6L seems to get the 02K/DUU gearbox. Unfortuantely the 1.6L engine isn't covered in my Bentley manual.

Nothing to see here...
Thanks for that.
A quick google shows the 02J doesn't have such a great reputation either, might have to advise him to avoid the golf.
Is the mkv known for dodgy gearboxes on the base models or was it improved?? eg 1.6l 5 speed
It surprises me that some of the better gearboxes are german (eg the getrag's in supras) but they also have so many cases of common faults when it comes to the VW boxes.
Thanks again
I'm not aware of any great failures in the 02J boxes - there are plenty of boosted Mk4 GTIs that get around.
And I erred before, the GTI is 1.8T, not 2.0T.

I'm sure that the 1.6 has 02K and the 2.0 has 02J gearbox
From what I have been told the 1.8, 1.8T and the 2.0 all have the same gearbox with slightly different ratios. The 1.6 however, apparently has a weaker version of the Mk3 1.6 gearbox that is very prone to failure.
