Yes the auto box in the 1.6 is prone to failure. Check for gearbox code DUU when you look at prospective cars, keep away from these.

As the others have said search "DUU gearbox" on google to see for yourself.

Although there is alot of heresay about the issues with the 1.6 gearboxes etc, I have a 1.6 manual and have had no problems after 135,000kms, the "supposed" failure point is generally around the 90,000km mark.

The only person on here that seems to have issues with their 1.6 is craig the german, unfortunately his seems to be a never ending cacophany of failures but that said, his is the only dodgy version I know of.

Yeah, the part is about $200, $220 from memory (mine is on the way out) but you will have to add labour time on top of that.

I have learned from past experience, if the owner refers to anything as "...it will only cost $xxx to fix...." then it means generally that's only the most obvious problem and there will be more lurking under the surface that aren't imediately apparent...... Like a cracked cylinder head and fried clutch...... sorry, went off an a tangent then!

    I'm Famous

    Hi all,

Seems i'm famous...or should that be infamous?

My gearbox was rebuilt at about 90000 after bits broke off the reverse gear and ground themselves into a metal paste that worked it's way through most of the gearbox.

Since the rebuild, I have done almost 50000km and (touch wood) all is well.

So much so that I have just ordered a 90TSI Manual MK6 and will be keeping the MK4 for my 17yo son as his first car.

The Autos in the Mk4 1.6s are better than the manual boxes in my experience.

OP, The O2 sensor is a fault that will come up on that car. However, I would also expect to change the MAF $350 or so and the temp sensor $40

Unplug the MAF sensor in the air intake hose and see if the car revs better. If so, haggle hard as you will have to spend more money.
