    mk3 vr6 into mk4?

Hey all, I have been on the look out for damaged golfs for a engine conversion and came across a 96 vr6 which is going through the auction next week.

I have done a few engine conversions before on subaru's but never a vw, so I have a question about the chassis.

Are the chassis similar/same to replace the hole sub frame(motor, box, brakes) from the mk3 to the mk4?

has anyone engineered a conversion like this before? i no there are certain requirements with emissions and i will have to speak with the engineer during the week.

    any info would be good.

    cheers
    steve

Dependant on state laws, I didn't think you were allowed to put an older engine into a newer car?

true, but the emissions laws changed in 97 and i think you can put in a 97 model VR6 into a leter model car as it complies to the newer emissions laws...

good luck trying to find a 97 model VR, let alone a wrecked one!
try finding a Bora V6 4 motion and slot that in its a DOHC VR engine and it has more power!

Mk4's came with VR6 engines in them in other countries anyway..mk4 Golf GTI VR6 or whatever anyone wants to call it, had a 12v VR6 engine with only very slight differences to the engine, and a big engine cover to conceal it.

As attractive as the idea sounds, I wouldn't be putting a 10 year old motor in a newer car. I reckon it's fraught with danger.

Getting immobilisers to function, making the rev counter work. Tons of other issues spring to mind like connecting to the fuse box, will the accessories like AC run smoothly?

It would seem like a rod for your back. Not that it can't be done but would you want to?

Dropping the VR into a 1.6 MK3 with all the VR running gear would be a different proposition.

The early US-spec only Mk4 VR6s were 12v engines and converted later to 24v as per UK etc.

Just for reference, Josh, all of them are DOHC in a single head - the angle of the cylinders is too small to have 2 separate heads and thus a quad cam overall layout.

You'd have to be on very bad drugs to put a 12v VR6 into a Mk4. A basic Mk4 GTI with a reflash would blow your doors clean off
