Mk. IV 1.8 20V automatic interlock problem?

After a semi-flat battery yesterday (it started after a 20 min. recovery), the auto. trans. selector interlock is not operating as it should. It will sometimes take 2-3 minutes for the interlock to disengage (so the gear selector can be moved out of park), but occasionally it will happen straight away.
I suspect a faulty relay, but my wife needs the car today and I'm hoping for a quick fix. I notice that the brake lights are not coming on until the moment the interlock disengages. I suspect a relay, and I'm hoping someone has had a similar problem and can point me in the right direction.
    Thanks

Mk. IV 1.8 20V automatic interlock problem?

    Thanks Steve,
I must admit I haven't checked ATF fluid yet, but it definitely seems an electrical problem, especially as it releases after a period of time.
I'm thinking a relay or the ECU suffered damage with the flat battery, but I'm hoping someone has had the same problem previously.
I'll check the ATF at lunchtime, and keep you informed.

sounds like it needs a diagnosis via VAGcom.definately electrical issue.not many auto owners here I suspect,im sure in a couple of days someone who has a little more knowledge will poke their head in.

Yes, I will try to get to a VAG.com later today. In the meantime I will try to check relays, etc. visually. I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

PS Auto wasn't my choice, but its not all that bad

Mk. IV 1.8 20V automatic interlock problem - solved?

Hopefully it's solved - it seems the culprit is /was a faulty stoplight switch (which controls the interlock). The battery problem may have been a trigger, or just a coincidence. Another ironic twist is the following recall by by VWoA, on the same day as my problem occurred - http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=169142
I doubt VWA will do anything with the recall, so I have a new switch on order. Thanks for the help.

They are on the 8th supercession now with these switches and they keep failing ! Another way of checking is making sure the cruise control works !
