Mk 4 R32 coolent fan issues

    Hi
Fuse S164 (sits on top of battery) rated at 40 amps blew the other day.
This fuse supplies currant for the high speed coolant fans.
Have replaced the fuse and the fans are running correctly.
I checked the currant consumption when the fans were running at full speed and got 38 amps.
I was wondering if there are any Mk4 R32 owners in the Perth area that I could check what the currant consumption is on their car?
It is a simple test I use a clamp on ammeter so I don’t disturb any connections - all I need to do is to remove the battery cover and I clamp the meter around the wire that runs on the top of the battery to the coolant control unit - test takes less than 2 minutes.
If anybody can help it will be appreciated – can arrange a time and place at your convenience.
    Thanks
    John

it is not uncommon for this fuse to go.
there are resistors built into each fan (to control high or low speed), and they tend to get hot and burn out over time - alternatively the fuse goes.
If only one resistor goes it put extra load on the remaining one in the other fan.
This tends to give AC issues - for some unknown reason the AC gets its power from the low speed side of the thermo fan...
After a while - both resistors go - you lose both cooling fans and AC - i know because this has just happened to me - waiting for some power resistors to arrive from overseas to do a bypass mod on the fans and get it all going again.

Alternatively you can replace your fans at $$$....

    Hey John,

It appears you have posted the above question/issue in the wrong section of the forum. As far as I'm aware it should of been posted here Mk4 Golf & Bora and New Beetle

Best bet would be to ask one of the moderators if they can move it to the appropriate section. Good luck and I hope your coolant fan issues get sorted as soon as possible. There are a few Perth MK4 R32 owners on this forum, such as Topaz and Pedro so if you would like me to put you in contact with them let me know.

I'm a massive fan of the MK4 R32 even though I have the Mk5, so I got to ask you the all important question below hehe.

Do you have some pics of the car?

    Hi Robbie
I have posted this thread into the correct section and will contact the moderator to get this thread removed from this section.
    Thanks for pointing it out.
If you could put me in touch with Topaz and Pedro that would be good.
Will load some pics of the R32.

Hi Stan, I assume these fans are similar to the Bora fans? Are your fans not working at all?
And it's just the resistor, not the fan motor that's dead?
Will you have to pull your fanset out to fit the mod?
Just wondering, because this happened to me in my Bora last year and I fitted a new (ebay generic fanset - $300) to fix it.
The ae said the generic fan set seemed quite a lot more solid than the OE one that came out, so hopefully it will last for a while.
I read a bunch of things at the time about the resistors and stuff - did you get yours from a website?
Let me know how it works out and what it looks like if you don't mind.
    Scott
