On newer ECU types it'll pick a cylinder but not on your Passat AFAIK.

As you have the ignition amp in the airbox, the ECU can't tell which one isn't working.

Even on the MK1 TT as an example, I have seen every coil die following a flash, yet only one actually registered as a hard fail.

I'd be more suspicious of the ignition amp on your motor over a bolt down coil pack. They are like 500 bucks from the dealer!! Quite easy for just one cylinder to be down so it runs like a WRX.

I second that, more than likely if you have a hard misfire then that bloody amp on the airbox with the 2 connectors on either end will be the little blighter, got me once, going around it circles as if you check the cylinder that you know is misfiring it still has all the powers and earths in the correct places as the good cylinders but there is no spark at the coil pack! Thats what happens when checking with a multimeter!! ....Yeh about 500 but I know you can get them for about 250 somewhere but cant remember at the moment...............VW...............

    Hey guys,

My GTI suddenly started up rough last night, and started sounding like a subaru...I'd only just driven it home from work a couple of hours earlier, and i hadn't noticed anything wrong during that drive, so it really seems to gone snap... I've checked for fault codes and vag coms giving me nothing from the engine at all. I've just changed the spark plugs and confirmed that they weren't causing the miss.

I'm just wondering how i should go about diagnosing whether a coil or that ignition amp could be to blame? Or are there other things i should be looking at entirely?

The ignition amp as has already been mentioned is the most likely suspect and will give a coil pack fault code.

They are $500 from the dealership. I usually have em in stock for $250 inc gst.
