Lost Keys to 99 Mk IV Golf

    Hi all,

I recently lost the last key to my 99 Golf. I'd either lost one before or it only ever came with one, I'm not sure. It had previously had a cobra remote thing attached to it (bean shaped thing with two oval shaped buttons on it, which unlocked and locked the car), but it had stopped working long ago so i took it off the key and just used the key to lock / unlock / start the car.

I can't attach an image so i've attached to a link to an image of the variety of key I had.

    http://www.keysfast.info/Quickstart/ImageLib/Vw_Key.jpg
    Questions;

    1. How do I go about getting a replacement without going anywhere near a VW dealer?

    2. Does my key need to be coded or just cut?

    4. If coded, it seems like I can get the reaquired code from a piece of software called Vag-Tacho. Is this accurate?

    5. The people at keysfast.info claim they can cut the key from a VIN. Does this sound right?

    6. If the key needs to be coded, can I do this using Vag-Com or Cag-Tacho? Or any other readily available software?

    Thanks in advance.

From memory, to get a key cut you need this black strip thing which has some numbers on it. Its a ignition code or something, when I purchased mine new it came with it in the handbook.

    had a spare cut recently.
got it done by a dealer - they send my VIN to Germany and it come back cut about 10 days later.
It then had to be coded to the car - i presume Vag Com does this.
    Hope that helps

    What did that cost?

It seems that Vag-Tacho can get the Key Code from the car, but the car needs to have the key in the ignition for vag-tacho or vag-com to run. Of course, if i had the key...

I have an '02 golf, enquired about a spare key, basically the process above is what I was told needed to be done. Was quoted ~$180 for the key, need to take the car in to get coded. (coding is for engine imobiliser).
I'm not sure if this will be the same in '99. Do you have the imobiliser? It may be a simpler/cheaper process if you don't

So is anyone aware of options other than factory keys?
Also what happens if you don't have a factory key coded?
I have a key, but need to get a spare.

Ive done plenty in this era. If you buy from VW yes it comes cut to the vin and it has to be coded to the car, Vag com doesnt do it per se, you need to suck the pin code form the dash with other software, in a few forms actually. Some better than others and some hit or miss. This era of Vw i personally havent had a drama. back to the comment on the strip supplied on the fob, that left with the dinosaurs in MK3 era. MK3 different ball game, Immob is seperate from the cluster. Mk4 is in the cluster therfore we can extract it via the obd port. Technically if you are really stuck get a whole lock suite from another breaking VW and code it. 2 - Get your key from VW in 14 days cut to the vin, still code it with the extracted code. Also the comment on the key fob , nothing fancy about coding them. all i can say of you havent played with pin extracting software and plan to beware, you can lock out your dash or have it running with a nice key sign flashing on your dash, take it to someone who knows what they are doing
