Angry Key stolen ! Rats !!!

    Hi All,

Left my bag with my MTBgear along with my Bora Remote Flip key in my GF's car outside her house, easily stolen with her type of car.

Luckily the bag did not have my address anywhere, but my guess is they know my car and the area and are looking for a joy-ride at a later date as I managed to find most of the rest of the gear including sunnies !!! Weird.

On the list of stolen stuff,

    A proper Leatherman
    Keys with Keyfob
IPOD (Semi broken so I don't care)

So my question is, can I take the car to have the ignition barrel and remote re-programmed so the car rejects them or do I have to have an aftermarket alarm installed as well as fork out for a new key ?

    Thanks !

The cars ECU is programmed to accept certain keys, if you were to take your current key and a new one to VW for them to code it, the old key should no longer work.

If you were keen you could also change the lock barrels so they can't get into the car either.

If I ordered the cheaper key, could I put in a decent alarm and have that control the central locking etc or if with the stock system they did manage to open the car with an old key that is not programmed, will an alarm sound or can I add this function to the car ?

The stolen key - as a car stolen when you don't have both sets of keys can be a little more difficult making a claim - as they can say you left one in the car itself...

Seb or somebody could answer on this as im not sure, assuming only.

The door locks obviously as well and programming is easily dont from VW itself (Seb can also do this now too however) for the Key itself.

If you get a keycut/programmed im able to get a second key (oem vw) and programmed for you at a later time if that helps, but id be more worried about the door locks to. Not sure if they can change the barrel settings or if its set per key itself?? ANybody ?

Cant change barrel settings mate its a lock suite you would need to overcome this. Like HAWK says if you teach a new key with the one you have got left then it will lose the stolen key, however like a few have pointed out they can still get into your car as they lock configuration is still original. A set of locks is the answer mate im afraid, ive done a set on an A3 for the same reason and he did the lock suite through insurance. Lets face it, its in the insurances best interest to pay for a set of locks rather than a vehicle mate.

But, my point is with the money the money spent on new lock barrels, it's probably possible to get a decent alarm with remote start that would whine like crazy if a door was popped plus they wouldn't be able to drive the car anywhere and if they are going to create that much noise, why not just break a window.

Holy Cr*P of F**ing Gawd ! I phoned the VW service department after speaking with Insurance who will cover it.

The quoted price for new locked barrels, and a set of keys comes to 451.70 $ !!!! Close to the price of a key !

Not sure on Fitment, which will probably bring the cost up to about 1000.00 $, I imagine.

How dificult is it to replace the locking barrels ? I.e. Ignition, trunk, doors ? Especially when I dont have access.
