    K&N cold air intake

    Hi there

I bought a second hand K&N typhoon CAI a couple of months back for my MK4 Golf. I had a closer look at it the other day and it seems the 2000 MK4 Golf has an ICM unit in the original airbox. Is there any way to mod the CAI so Everything will still work?

The ICM has a small heat sink and needs airflow to keep it cool. It is mounted on the airbox so it can take advantage of the airflow.
Personally I zip tied mine up near the firewall and had no issues for about 6 years. Then one day I got stuck in traffic for hours and it died. It was not fun at all. When it goes it can cause other problems, like stuffed spark plugs, oxygen sensors or even catalytic convertor due to excessive unburned fuel.

So if you move it you should be addressing the cooling problem. Maybe a huge heat sink would help, a big piece of aluminium ?
I thought about a PC CPU heat sink, maybe with a fan.

There is not a lot of slack on the wiring so you can't move it far, it would be great down near the radiator fans.
You could cut a hole in your new airbox and mount it that way.

I've put my stock air box back in for the time being.

cai is proven to make a **** load of cool induction noise. The Bmc I have brings on darth vadar. The air box needs to be enclosed to be legal in southern states.

Im thinking of cutting a hole in the CAI and mounting the ICM in that. Thinking it should be basically exactly the same as its original position. what do you think?

Sounds logical. I'm keen to know what it's like once you've got it on

Just a caution about the CAI. Try your best to make it enclosed because a friend of mine got a defect on his skyline for an exposed CAI pod. Although, I think a skyline would be more of a cop magnet than a golf. Also try and put it near a cooler part of the engine bay to avoid hot air being sucked into the CAI as much as you can. Just thought I'd let you know
