    just did 1st real mountain run

    wow! just came back from o'reilly's

    the beetle did very well.

    only a stock petrol 2.0 but it was always able to keep speed up.

    i let some tailgating smartasses overtake and then surprised them by having no problems being much faster than them. 2008 corolla on the way up and new mercedes c250 on the way down. plus plenty of other cars but those guys looked like they were really trying. much newer cars beetle by old mark 4 design? shame!

    didn't have anyone qlse overtake me on the way up or the way down. fantastic road and the beetle ate it up.

    saw a heap of s13 silvias at the top and was keen to run behind them on the way down, but only because i know their stock brakes are inadequate and i'd be laughing.

    areas for improvement:
    -reduce undesteer (it's much better than most small cars i've driven though)
    -too many turns of the wheel to go around tight u turns

    strangely enough i was quite happy with the power. as long as it was in the rev range it was fine on the uphill.

    exterminating toads on the way back was fun too

    Strangely enough I think the 2.0 has an undeserved reputation for being complete rubbish - to read some people's comments on the engine you'd expect that half way up a decent incline you'd have to stop and get out to push ... Maybe it's not as peppy as the 1.8T, but I've never found my 2.0 lacking in regard to its willingness to tackle hills - in fact it seems to thrive on them ... The ratios of the gearbox are well matched to the engine and acceleration is not a problem ... Long live the 2.0!

    yes! there's more than enough power to go around thanks to the way the ratios are set up. i've driven the 1.8T and while it's more peppy, it didn't make a world of difference imo. people put the 2.0 down too much. the 1.8t makes more power easily accessible though

    I think the "2Slow" jokes are meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

    And the 1.8T was known more for its potential than power from the factory.

    I have... putty rd in NSW... 80k zone... not enough torque, so using 3rd gear, maybe 2nd, i cant remember... was craving a turbocharger...

    yep, but on steep hills and tight bends the handling and traction limits what the car can do. i think riding a 250cc bike got me used to being up in the 3/4 part of the rev range a lot of the time
