I have a oil pressure riddle for you guys
Ok so i have had an oil pressure light come on for some time now but a couple the couple of mechanics that have looked at it haven't been able to pin it down, but it frustrates the hell out of me. Here are the symptoms:
- The light will only come on when the car is in gear
- It only happens once the oil is up to temperature... about 20-30 mins of driving
- it happens under low engine load 1500 to 2000 rpm
- It will come beep and flash for a few seconds then go and come back a few minutes later
So far to try and diagnose it they have:
- vcds scanned... only code 01120 camshaft adjustment (mechanical malfunction)
- oil pressure directly measured showed normal pressure when the light came on
- did a new german filter and oil cleaning treatment
- checked oil pickup filter which showed some blockage but nothing substantial
- oil pressure switch changed
Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, the camshaft adjustment code can in fact be oil pressure related mate, ive had to change a couple due to being gummed up with carbon. Anyway one thing missing from your riddle is the figures from an oil pressure test, before going any further get it to a point where its failing at whatever temp you mention, oil is thinner when hot too which could have significance. test the pressure mate and go from there . Record when it beeps the use that rev range and temp and record what the pressure is like.
Let us know
Cheers

Thanks for your time Jmac
sorry i just said riddle cause both the mechanics where unsure where to go next
I noticed it pretty specifically beeps at 1600rpm consistently when the engine is warm. When the oil pressure was measured directly it was at 30mmHg from memory when it was beeping but unfortunately i don't know if this was at the same rpm as the mechanic could measure it while driving due to the location in the engine and his extension did not reach (measured with the front wheels jack up)
And the light will not go out until i have revved the engine over 2000rpm
with the VCDS software can you directly measure the temp and pressure live?
When they did look inside for the oil pickup filter they did say that there was some carbon build up in the engine, but i've had the oil pressure sensor replaced twice already so i hope that it would be clean around the at lead that sensor area

Oil pressure for a VW should be a BAR measurement. From memory should be three bar at idle and go to six while revving if its drops below three bar at 2,000 rpm the dash will light up I'm not 100% with readings.
What car? What engine? I've seen it many times were the wrong oil pressure sensor is fitted.

Hey grtuned
Thanks for you time
I probably wrong on the measurement... the place that i went to was old school, they do alot of aircooled vdubs, so they may be doing some imperial measurements or something :s but the mechanic though that it was within range and should be throwing that error
i have a '98 gle 1.8l aspirated golf4 with an agn engine, any way to tell if it's the right sensor by it markings etc?
