Thread: how to turbo a 2001 2.0L Golf

    Old mate already bailed guys... he just wanted some help. Old sayings aside, not everyone wants a gti. To me gti means the same thing as having a huge wing on the back of a car that never goes faster than 150kph.

    sorry guys havent been on in a few days. been busy.
    essentially it would be quicker than a gti. i dont really need a gti for all the "extras" i already have leather seats, and i can live with out a sunroof.
    i am looking for performance. not so much the the label "GTI".
    i know it would be easier to get a gti if i wanted turbo, but i want the satisfaction of building the 2.0 into a turbo, and just working on the engine and all that!
    i dont care if people think its a stupid idea, i never asked for there opinion on that, i just asked for what i needed and approximate costs!

    Have to say im a bit disappointed with the way people have reacted to this one, its been like flies to a piece of dog poo. Give the guy a break. I know i would rather have a GTi granted but to be fair the question was "how to turbo a 2.0" not what do you think of my idea? cmon folks.There has been a few questionable things been asked and still do get asked on here and this is far from the worst.

    Hey robert4, I have done a fair bit of research into doing this for my car as well so while others here (who for example) will have a much better idea of total costs you will be looking in the reigon of approx 10k to do a proper turbo build. You have many options from kits through to buy all the parts yourself. While the mk4 2.0 isnt a natively turboed engine you will be able to get parts to suit although they will be rarer and a lot will need to be imported, the joys of owning a european car.

    You may be able to get away with it a bit cheaper but I say 10k to include things like suspension and brakes, exhaust etc. If your not a very handy person mechanically you could add another few grand for labour.

    Here is a starting point for you to look at... bolt on mate

    thanks for that coralon. might have to start saving a bit if its gona be that much!haha
    also another question....would the turbo be hidden behind the engine cover?
    and all i really need is just the headers wouldnt i. i could just get the other parts myself?

    You could definately source all the parts individually, I just liked the kit so you could get an idea of the hardware required. Depending on the layout of the piping and intake etc it should be possible to put the engine cover back on but without a downfacing manifold it will be hard to hide a snail especially on a 2l

    thats what i was thinking like just getting all the parts and really just needing the headers, gaskets ect.
    wont the turbo be under the engine cover tho?

    Really? I thought this was a discussion board, where people you know . . . share their opinions. What's the point in asking for advise when you don't want to hear it?

    If the OP's objective was easy or cheap, then everyone would be driving turboed 2.0s. Not only that, I don't think anyone has mentioned insurance or registration which is more complicated with an aftermarket turbo setup.

    Sure. If the OP only wants 140kw (easy) and proven reliability then get a GTI and chip it. It'll also have climate control and slightly better interior, 288mm brakes and sports suspension too. I haven't looked lately, but I don't think there would be any issues finding a pre-chipped car for $12-15k.

    If he wants modify the car despite the extra complications (and if you're going to replace the GTI brakes and suspension anyway), spend more time to install the turbo/test and tune, more $$$ and less resale value - turbo the 2.0. You'll end up with something unique, possibly more powerful - but at what cost?

    The turbo mounts onto the exhaust manifold so it is possible a heat shield could hide it but generally engine covers dont cover the exhaust. You can run a very low boost say 5-6psi on a non intercooled turbo system and slowly add more parts to it, this will reduce initial outlay but the most important thing is understanding the need to lower compression if you plan on running higher boost for more power, either with a head spacer or go old school and get low compression pistons but the dollars go up then.

    There are many paths to a build, start slow and keep the boost low and you could get out of it real cheap, but if you want power then be prepared to open your wallet... a lot
