Remove every possible bit of weight from the car. Bumpers, Doors, boot, bonnet, fenders.

Here's a fool proof 2-step guide to make a your mk 4 2.0 go faster.
    1. Sell it.
    2. Buy a GTI.

    Hope that helps.

Not a great deal you can do to the 2.slow. If you have a money tree in the garden, you could get some head work, cam and manifold but TBH if you made it to 100Kw you would be lucky. Best advice is save your money until you can get the real thing.

I know it's hard, we have all been young and wanted a quicker car. Don't fit things that you can't take off or transfer to your next car is my advice.

as the others have said. Sell and buy a gti if you want a turbo golf.
2l are slow, reliable and good on fuel. Thats it.
there is threads on vortex where guys have done everything they can to a 2lt other then turbo, and it only made the same power as a stock gti
if it was worth while i would have done it...
But if you do decide to turbo it please post up what you find

    2.0L turbo???

    There is an old saying
"Don't try to build what you can buy"
As everyone has said buy a GTI. There is a lot more to a GTI than the engine and if you bought a GTI you would get all of this (seats, trim, suspension, wheels etc etc etc)
No matter what you do to the 2.0L, no matter what mods you make or how much money you spend...it will still be a Golf 2.0L

There is a guy on Vortex in the Aus section "Erotas", he built a 2.0T with the help of Arthur from Exoticars in Sydney. Good person to ask about the details and nitty gritty of doing it.

I would always suggest just buying a GTI though, as mentioned by everyone above.

    LOL.

I think the GTI might be his best option.

Sell your car and buy a GTI. A bolt on Turbo setup will likely nett you with a less reliable, less safe, more expensive and less valueable (resale wise) car than if you spent the same money + the sale price of your car on a GTI.

Im gonna go against some of the things said here .
If your going for 150kw atws or less then by all means get a gti , it will be far cheaper to do it that way .
But if you want more then its not worth changing to a gti .

Biggest issue with the mk4 gti Australia gets is there is no map sensor hooked up so your limited by whatever the MAF can max out at . You'll find the most power you can get out of a mk4 gti will be one fitted with a VR6 MAF . The biggest turbo you can safely use then while using the MAF inputs is a gt28rs , and even then you need to find a tuner who could tune it (long and costly as there is no off the shelf tune AFAIK) . So basically going gt2871r or bigger on either the mk4 2.0 or 1.8t your going to need stand alone which most run a map sensor .

The 1.8t engine has a lot more headflow compared to the 2.0 , but if you start going past the 250kw atws mark you'll need to start upgrading cams/cam valves , valve springs etc etc . The 2.0l 8v has 1 cam , 8 v and 8 valve springs . The 1.8t has 2 cams , 20 valves , 20 valve springs etc . The cost to rebuild a 1.8t head will far outweigh the 2.0 . The 2.0 is also a larger capacity to begin with so youd need to buy a stroker crank for the 1.8t to get it to 2.0l . Then you will need to clearance the block etc . Even smaller things like the timing belt the 1.8t is usually converted to the non-hydraulic set up due to the high rates of failure of hydraulic units at higher rpm/load . So by the time you build the engine to take big power it will cost less for the 2.0 than the 1.8t .

The gearbox in the 2.0l is pretty much the same as the 1.8t . The seats may be better in the gti but once you start getting decent power your gonna need a 4 point harness and proper bucket seats anyway . Same goes with brakes , 288mm brakes with 400hp+ just wont cut it so any advantage the gti had here no longer applies . I could go on but I dont have time .

In the real world yes the fastest fwd VW in the world is a 1.8t , but less than 0.01 seconds slower is a 2.0t :

I think the question that really needs to be asked of the OP is how much money he wants to spend and how much power he's after. Of course there are possibilities with the 2.0L, after several years of ownership i turbocharged my first car, a 1.6L nissan pulsar with good results... however given the power vs cost ratio i would've been better off just buying a faster car in the first place. Comparing a High HP build I've also been down the road of modifying an already quick car (R32 GTR) and you could kind of compare that to my current build a VR6 Turbo. Both netted big power and the thing here was cost wise they came towards a similar ball park once chasing big power. However stock for stock the GTR was leaps and bounds ahead of the Bora.

Moral of the story if the OP is after a huge amount of power then there's no reason working with what he's got wouldn't be a bad idea, he's going to spend the money on either car to get the hp out of them. If he's not after big power though financially a far better option would be to sell and buy a GTI.

My 2c... either that or just dont do it lol, cars are a money pit!!!!!!!!!

Hang on Rob, I thought with your little current project, you would be encouraging this! I didn't see too many people saying "Who, don't be an idiot, just buy an R32" because you were doing it with a Bora 4Motion. And before anyone goes spastic about the "rarety of the Mk4 R32: Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au - carsales.com.au 1247 1252 1282 4294962746 4294962677 4294774536 4294950689

6 of them on car sales.

I really don't understand the people who get on this forum and their first comment when someone say they want to do this is "you're an idiot!, buy a GTI". I know of someone who is building a GTI beater out of a NA Mk4 but hasn't posted it, probably due to the sheer amount of flak he would cop from all of you! have you ever thought that someone might not actually want a GTI, maybe they like the 2.0 Golf instead?

Robert4, you know what? if you have the cash, I say go with it because as Bug-Racer has said, you would flog anyone with a Mk4 GTI with a chip in it if you do it right and you can laugh your ar*e off when you see the people who critisised dissapear in your mirror!

I'm glad I bought a polo and don't really hang around in this forum anymore, bar Rob's turbo 4 motion thread, everytime I go through the Mk4 section it depresses me with all the negativity....
