How Much are our MK4's actually worth? Honestly.

I've got my MK4 GTI for sale at the moment. It's been up for 2 weeks on carsales and I have had only 1 call. I'm asking $16,900 but would reasonably take in the higher $15K's. Personally I think it's an awesome car for combination of safety, performance and euro in a hatchback but obviously the market doesn't think so.

We all know sadly that mods don't really add value to the car and at absolute best you may if you're very lucky get 50% back on the cost of the mods (not labour!).

I'm just seriously surprised that I have not had more calls. Maybe I am expecting too much?

What MK4 do you have and how much do you think it's worth?

To be honest, it is a tough 2nd hand car selling market. If you want to sell it quickly you will probably have to consider 13K - Jules has had his MKIV GTI on the market for 6 months nearly and no takers at 15K.

I should add, I had a 1.6 MKIV 2000 model and sold it 24 months ago for 12K.

After seeing the prices that mk4 GTIs have been going for it seems like they are worth next to nothing. over the last year or so there seems to have been a big price drop.

I wouldnt mind upgrading to something else. but i figure i may as well drive my mk4 for a few more years as i dont think they are going to drop in value too much more and its still a really good quick safe little car.

Remember these cars are 2 models old now. for lots of ppl thats way too old.

    Bought my 2000 S3 for $16500 in April. They were 30k 3 years ago when I bought a 98 A3 turbo for 16K.

They are pretty much worth 3/5th's of 5/8th's of Sweet **** all

Face it MKIV's are two generations old now and anything with high K's and more than one owner isn't going to fetch more than around 15K in a GTI and mid to low 20's in an R, any mods will in most cases only decrease the value as most people would see it as the car being driven hard rather than by a Mom to the shops on a Saturday.

If you want to get top dollar remove the mods, sell them separately and try and sell the car as a stock, safe form of transport to a parent looking to buy a first car for their kid.

hahahaha $17k, you make laugh, you really do....

To the original poster: depending on the year you'd be lucky to get $15k for a late model with options. Your's being a 2000 model you won't get $15k. I paid that much for a 2000 GTI with 30,000 less kms in mint condition 18 months ago. Your mods aren't going to add anything to the price.

Realistically I think you should be expecting $12-13k. If that.

By the way, I'd prefer to buy an unmolested one for a bit more. I'd strip all the parts off your GTI except the chip and go back to OEM before selling.

I plan to have mine written off by some careless truck etc. I'm confident it will happen sooner or later.
Insured for a bit over $17K
There is no way I could sell it for any reasonable price.
In QLD P platers cannot drive turbo any more - there goes my market.
