In other markets (read Europe) this car would be $7K. New cars really should be worth 50% of their value after three years like in other countries.

    I had a 1998 MK3.5 Cabrio (Mk3 Cabrio with Mk4 cosmetics)with the 2.0L engine, electric roof & 16x7 rims. It was a $52,000 car when new.

In 2006 I paid $13500 for it with 90,000km on the odo and it was a nice straight car with some minor issues that were fixed relatively cheaply.

When I was hunting for a GT Sport last year, the trade-in varied between $6k-$8k and I finished up getting $12500 trade-in on the Skoda. By that time the car had ~130,000km. The dealership had it on the lot for ages trying to sell it for $14500. Hope that helps with your pricing

The trouble is all second hand cars are woth lots less than they were a year or 2 ago.

I have seen high ks Mk4 GTIs go for under 10k in Sydders. I know people would rather have a low ks unmolested one, but it makes it harder if there are cheapies out there.

It has impacted on all our cars.

Mk1s are worth nothing now, Mk3s are $3;5k as oppossed to $6-7k 18months ago.

Might as well just get something you like and drive it till it dies. There is no money to be made with second hand cars anymore IMO.

i thought i got a pretty good deal, i paid 15.5k for my 2003 (my04) gti with 85,000 on the clock about 10 months ago... car had just come off the guys 5 year lease so was good to know the servicing was done regularly as you have to get it serviced properly on leases... and the water pump and timing belt had been done which was a bonus, and fresh tires (which i seem to have already gone through!!)
i'm now over 100,000k's on it, so i can only see the value dropping considerably from here on!
Suppose i plan to spend small amounts on it performance wise to keep the dream alive so to speak, but not so much than when i get rid of it in say 6 years time, i feel like i've thrown a lot of money down the drain.
i reckon this car will age well, looks wise. doesn't have than vintage vw golf look at the moment, but give it 5 years i reckon it'll look trick.

That fits with my plan, hopefully I'll go first and they can bury me in it.

Mine's in the process of being sold but nothings concrete till I see money so it's still on the market for $15k. Considering negotiations, I'll be lucky to get $13.5k.

When I bought the car 5 years ago, I was looking at this one and a 2003 model Type R Integra. The Integras on Carsales are fetching almost the same as they were 5 years ago ~$20 - 25k.

My next car is going to be a Type R.

It's kinda disappointing hey, but the used car market seems to have turned south pretty badly in the last couple of years as discussed above. I was looking at the specs of yours a couple of days ago when you posted the new ad, hadn't realised before that you have the Oettinger + K04 upgrade as well! I'm not looking at selling anytime soon but I'd still want more than that with the R bodykit and OZ wheels on it too...

Take a look at what the mk4 gti goes for in the UK, just take the figure in pounds and double it to give you the AUD....

This is just one example... and that is AUD$6,000!!!

For what they are going for here, i could buy 2 at those prices!!

Cars are never an investment, buy one that you want, use it and have fun with it, and dont let the odometer and the depreciation ruin the enjoyment!
