Oh well thats good to hear. Thanks for the help mate. It's suddenly looking a bit more attractive.
mine has done a 100k and i have had my front wheel bearings replaced twice (both wheels twice), AFM replaced, sway bar links replaced, coolant temp sensor replaced, it needs new discs all around and it needs front top mounts and probably some of the bushes on the front too. There is a clonking noise from the front suspension when turning and exiting/entering driveways. Drivers seat is getting a bit worn as well, the bit where the bottom part of the seat belt touches the seat and the gear knob is worn too. My advice is that if you cant get a low mileage one (50k or less) be prepared to put some money in it. And its an expensive car to run and parts are hard to find.
At my last service costed $650 for engine oil and filter to be changed, haldex oil and filter changed and coolant changed. Yhis was done by a VAG specialist and i know for a fact that he charges almost half price than VW dealers

I'd say with buying any secondhand MkIV to have $2-3k+ aside for preventative maintenance and some left over for things that might give up:
- full service - plugs, oil, fluids, filters etc
- bushes all round
- brakes
- temp sensor
- things that might stop working such as the MAF, fans, clutch pedal breaking
- etc
2000 Mk IV GTI
Check the age/condition of the clutch and flywheel too (as best you can by the feel through the pedal). My Bora with ~80,000km needed a replacement of both, and that wasn't cheap (over $2k).
You can use this as a bargaining tool though - if you know it's going to need work, take that off the price you're willing to offer.
Nothing to see here...
Hmm okay, so pretty much if i buy one i'll need to have a few grand set aside for repairs that will pop up. Ill give it some thought. Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate all the good quality replies. Ill be sure to let you know if i get on of them
Actually, what are all the expensive services that come up around 100,000kms? And how much are they?
Dont let kms put you off . Its only an assumption the chains need to be replaced every 200k kms . Im sure they will last longer with regular oil changes
