as most have mentioned brake cleaner usually eats through most of the crud...

perhaps try cleaining them with some soapy water and a brush to get most of the build up off and then hit it with the brake clean...

ideally you should disassemble the whole caliper assembly and it it with a wire wheel in a drill, but thats a hell of a lot more time consuming, and some decent results can be had with a bit of careful preparation while still onthe car...

post up some pics when youre done!

Mate, I've made a DIY How To Video on it which you can find here:

And I did it to my MK4 GTI with RS4 Rims - here's a video of the job and the final product...

Let me know how you go or if you have any questions!

All wheels look the same painted black, especially in pics IMO.

Might as well have $100 steelies as $2000+ BBS if you are gonna paint em I reckon.

Thanks all for the advice; all done now, gave the car a quick (not as good as usual standard) clean this arvo so this is how it ended up (see attachments)(if i have managed to use this properly!) If anyone has seen this style of wheel painted, how did it look/turn out?

    Cheers

    Yep I agree.
Thats why I just painted the stockies,
Mind you the reason I did mine was I reckon the grey standard finish mags made it look like a hairdressers car.
