Help me with my fuel economy questions, please?

I may have a new work opportunity that will require me to drive more than 20mins each way in the boz.

Currently, due to only traveling 12ks each way, my car gets an average of 12.5l p/100ks. Not great.

I know that once I am traveling further, my LPH will get better, but how much better?

This is making us consider selling the bozza and getting something little (fiat 500 perhaps) due to the increased cost involved with tolls, parking and fuel.

    SO, my questions...

Do you commute in your v6 bora, if so for how far and what kind of economy do you get? My commute will be mixes of bumper to bumper with 70-80 kph sections for 30 ks.

Is there a chip to improve economy? Lower the flow, reduce the power, just for this kind of driving? They all advertise 'better economy' but never do they have figures. The APR would let me use regular fuel, but while that may reduce my overall cost of filling up by $10 or so, I can't see it improving the economy as such.

I love my boz, everything works, it just does everything well, despite doing 400 million kilometers. It'd be a shame to get rid of something that isn't causing us any problems, besides it's thirstiness.

    Thanks,

    Christian

Your economy depends entirely on the traffic & the way you drive.

There isn't much you can do about traffic besides a bit of route planning to avoid the heavy areas or leaving later / earlier to avoid the peaks.

Driving style is entirely up to you. My normal commute is 50 minutes / 45km each way. If I put my thumb-in-bum & mind-in-neutral I get about 7.0L/100km. If I drive with economy in mind I can get this down to 5.8L/100 & if I get a good run as low as 5.0L/100km. (NB: not a Bora)

60km round trip per day is only 15000km/pa. At 12.5L/100km that would be ~1875L of 98ron @ $1.65 =$3100. That's gross & not taking into account that you already use fuel on your current commute.

    edit: bad calcs!

    Hey Guys,

To clarify, I'm not looking for miracle cures or how to drive more efficiently. I'm curious about what kind of figures others get under similar circumstances and whether or not people have measured their efficiency improvments with any chips.

h100vw, i used to ride 12 k's each way to my current work. 30 k's each way is a whole new beast I'm not eager to tackle.

Yep, this is what I have been doing, but on a monthly basis. My Bora @ 12.5 would cost $300-and-something, while and econetic Fiesta would cost $70-something. Hard to look past that. Especially when my car is not used for anything else, its not touched at all on weekends.

    Thanks!

70 is <25% of 300. I really doubt a econetic Fiesta would achieve 3L/100km unless you were really hyper-miling.

In the same way your Bora doesn't achieve the fuel economy figures "advertised" by VW, not many other vehicles achieve the "advertised" consumption unless driven under ideal conditions.

Fiesta Econetic will cost you $11k-$15k. Bora is worth $6k-$11k & is near the bottom of the depreciation cycle.

For me, just to go to & from work, I'd just rack up the miles in the old car - especially if it's an enjoyable car to drive & you love it.

Hi Prank, I think I might be able to give you some insight into my fuel consumption in my Bora.

On my 12-15K trips each day, the Bora averages roughly 10L/100KM - 12L/100KM (Dependant on how I drive). This is a mixture of 80kph driving and some 50kph bumper to bumper.
On my 25K trips in Gold Coast gridlock traffic, I seem to get roughly 13L/100KM.

These figures are from the readings from the car computer. Again, I get roughly 475-500 Km per 55L fill.

Finally, I have noticed no difference in fuel economy readings between using Caltex 95 and 98. Hope this helps!

buy a tdi or 2.slow for daily or every second day?
If I flog mine on the 15min drive to and from school I get 11lt/100km, and 6s if babying it.
sure its no 4mo with amazing noise, but cant complain with figures like that for a daily commute in traffic.

I redid the calculations today and got roughly $190 for the Bora for a month... Maybe I was drunk the other night? I'm not sure how I got to those other figures.

    Thanks guys.

I used to have a jetta 147TSI that averaged on my daily drives around the 9L/100k's. It was a mixture of freeway and suburban driving with the trip taking about 35 minutes one way.
I got an APR chip done and driving the same routes and the same style i got improved economy by about 1L/100k's.
On freeway driving (110kmh) I could get down to 7.5L/100k's on average.

Curious, are you able to switch between tunes with your chip?
