Help help help!!!

I own a 2002 Golf 2.0SE which is my DD and need it for work.

Apparently my mechanic reckons the fuel pump is starting to fail me. On cold starts especially early morning it takes about 15mins to get it going, I can even smell petrol fumes, but, when starting for the first time at about mid day it needs just a bit off revving and will run smooth within a minute. Occasionally when im driving it seems not to pump properly it'll shake like i've run out of petrol. after downshifting and kicking the revs it runs properly again. The weirdest thing is my temp gauge seems rise and fall quite noticeably.

To those who know please tell me the actual cause of the problem and if it is a fuel pump issue where can I buy a new OEM pump and filter for a reasonable price ECS Tuning has one for $320 excl shipping.

Who is your mechanic ?
It could be a number of things, from temp, O2 sensor or even cam position (hall) sensor.
A proper diag scan would probably show it up.

as above, have it properly scanned.
I cant imagine the temperature gauge would be related to fuel pump, which would hint that something else could causing a issue

Thanks guys, my mechanic (Michael, from Excel Grease, quite reputable in this town) isn't a VW dealer and doesn't have a scanner for vdubs, he reckons he heard the fuel pump making noises. If its the O2 sensor does the car smoke coz mine isn't smoking? If cam positioning is off does it mean it needs a timing belt change?

There are no warning lights whatsoever. sorry for all the questions but my local VW dealer has proved to be a bit clueless money a few times I lost my confidence in them.

Don't change anything without a scan. A water temp sensor can cause poor running, even if the gauge indicates correctly. there's 2 parts to the sensor. One for the gauge and one for the ECU.

No offence to your mechanic as he is probably great, but you really need the scanner and some knowledge of these cars.
I never have warning lights for anything maf or o2 sensor related, that's where the scanner comes in

Can you please suggest the most ideal scanner for my car, I prefer a handheld device you can also chuck in some laptop based software names. Please note I use a windows computer.

im not familiar with the scanners and what does what sorry. I've always had mechanics and friends use their own

skatz, what they are suggesting is either using a VAGCOM cable attached to a laptop, which can be done by someone with one OR taking your car to a VW service centre and have them put it on their diagnostic equipment. These are the best ways to discover the fault codes or other possible causes of your issues.
