My engine light didnt come on, but a scan will tell you if it is a coil pack and what cylinder is dead. You'll know if it is a coil - loss of power, sounds very lumpy (boxer engine) when accelerating, engine shaking. If there's no loss of power or odd sounds then it may be something else as others have said.

Yeah if you have none of the above symptons for a coilpack, then I'd be leaning towards a failed mount.

You'll have to jack up the car to have a look at the dogbone mount. For the engine and gearbox mounts get in there with a mirror and torch and look for cracking and/or destroyed rubber. Loose/sheared bolts maybe harder to identify though.

"Borrowing" your better half's or other female acquaintance's makeup mirror will aid you here (or your makeup mirror if that kind of thing floats your boat).

    Cheers,
    Trent

Thanks guys for all the response.
The car is back to normal this morning, ie dead cold. so it rules out the possibility of mechanical issue (mount, suspension, etc etc). It has to be some kind of sensor fault which affected by temperature.

Someone mentioned ignition sensor before, I'll bring the car back home and check it this weekend.

I start to feel VW reliability problem now , I just replaced crank angle sensor 8 months ago

a scan should tell you what it is. The 1st time I had a coil go on me it kinda half went and ran a bit low on power, then was fine for several weeks. Then it went completely and I had the shakes and boxer engine sound.
Just head down to your local vw specialist and they will generally scan for free - takes 5 minutes

The MK4 ECU isn't that bright and doesn't know if coilpacks or ignition amps have failed.

I have personally seen a failed ignition amp and also duff sparkplugs cause poor running.

The ME7 ECU in the 4 motion and other 4 pot turbos often picks a cylinder but not always.

Substitution of the ignition amp is the quickest way to check it out. They may fail after a short time of running but be ok first thing in the morning.

Ya, turn out the fault is ignition control module (aka ignition amp, power output stage, whatever confusing names )

    Dame expensive little electronic box
