    Help with engine codes...

    Hey everyone..

Can anyone help me understand why my car has these codes?

Mechanics got no idea why the codes come up

First off, is there any running issues with the car?

The first thing to do is reset the codes and see if they re-appear. The heating open circuit could be due to the probe being disconnected with the ignition switched on. Not really likely but the ECU could see that as the same fault, if you know what I mean.

Assuming that heater fault comes straight back, I reckon it will, then you would fit a new probe and recheck for faults. If you didn't want to fit a probe, then you would troubleshoot the wiring first to prove the heater power is good or bad.

Thing is, troubleshooting at $80 an hour and then having to fit the probe anyway, could turn out to be wasted money.

I am very surprised your mechanic hasn't offered to fit a new probe?????????????

Yeah we re-set the codes and they all came straight back up. He didn't want to charge me a fortune so we are researching it first..

The car runs ok sometimes but it blows black smoke when u put ur foot down and also uses alot of fuel.. It's gutless sometimes..

Blows black smoke = rich because the lambda probe isn't working. Most likely the probe is bad, given the faults you have got. Hanging a new one on the wires without starting the car would prove it, the codes will reset and stay away.

Still surprised they didn't offer to change the lambda probe, they aren't that expensive.

EDIT with VCDS you can see the live data from the probe. Can their scanner not do that?????

Lambda faults catch the best of them out because the minute they see sensor they want to fit one, the description isnt digested like upper limit exceeded or lower limit exceeded, these are driven by another problem but in this case there isnt much research reqd, the description is heater circuit and also a probe circuit malfuntion. If the wiring os ok itll more than likely be the probe. He can also check the pulse width of the injetors, i would hazard itll be pretty wide if you see black smoke. Disconnect the probe and the ecu will default and the injectors puse width should drop. Being Bank 1 which all it can be is bank one being 4 cyl and S1 which is sensor 1 ( mixture regulation) then itll be more than likely the probe. If the wiring is good then go for it
    Cheers
    Hope you get it sorted

Ah mate, i didnt see that there as it was highlighted. That code is normally a faulty EGR valve for sure, but you can run a performance test on it with VCDS, i doubt the scanner, looks like hanatech ultrascan there will be able to do the EGR test. They normally run like a pork chop when the EGR valve is on the fritz. Looks like there is a couple of issues going on there unfortunately. Ive changed dozens of these valves on these, so they are fairly common .

Stupid question but what does it do? And where is the valve?

EGR = exhaust gas return. its an emissions compliance system that refeeds exhaust gas into your intake.
