Take it to Manheim fowles, for a second opinion.
Hi Guys,
Unfortunately our 2003 Golf was caught in the massive hail storm in Perth the other week. Its sustained damage to the roof, bonnet, hatch section, front guards and at the top of each of the doors. My insurance company told me i could either take it to manheimfowles this saturday for it to be inspected or i could try and find a panel shop that would give me a quote. I went and got a quote today and apparently its sustained approx $7000 damage. The car is insured for about 13k. I was a bit concerned about how they plan to repair the car and im worried it wont come back the same car. They're talking about replacing the roof, bonnet and then trying to remove the dents to the rest of the car. they thought they'd respray about 75% of the car.
My worries are:
- Cutting the roof off cant be a good thing
- only respraying 75% of the panels on a 7 year old car will mean the other panels that havent been sprayed will standout
- Are they just slightly under quoting on the damage because they know they'll get the job and the car wont be written off.
Has anyone had experience with this or been through the same process?
I really feel that the car should be a write off. I just know if i get it back after being repaired i wont be happy with it and it will be sent back time after time.
Thanks guys,
Mike

yeh, i think i will.
i might look into getting an independent assessor to look at the car. You really need someone who has no financial interest in whether the car is repairable or written off.
is there anyone else who had similar damage and the car was either written off or quoted to be repaired?
friends of mine had a Mazda 3, and the damage only looked cosmetic, but on critical panels. it was probably insured for around $20k and the RAC wrote it off, but gave them the choice

my r32 was damaged finally took her in to get repaired yesturday im so glad it wasnt a writeoff
I had a similar thing happen to my bmw. Its insured for 6k and they still want to fix it using a paintless dent removal. Accessor said that if that doesnt work, they will fill in the dents and give the car a respray. They will have to respray the whole car coz its red and 20 years old
I was almost sure they will write it off. Maybe its the best to get an insurance accessor to look at it first, they might just write it off on the spot

The quotes came back at $9,976. Given the car is insured for $13,450 i would have thought it would be written off. After speaking to my insurer they're claiming that they'll approve the repair. I have to admint im not happy with this given that they're pretty much respraying the whole car except two panels. The car definitely wont be the same again. I think im going to go down the path of an independent assessment.
what do you guys think?

Wow almost 75%
Find out how much more to get the other panels resprayed. You could get them done cheap and get a good result.
MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
I spoke with the insurance company again and the story has changed. Apparently the car is still being assessed and its likely that it will be written off. I wonder what they'll say when i call them today.............
I too am still waiting on an assessment not only for panel damage but for engine damage due to water getting in.
Good luck, think we all could be waiting for a while !
