GTI APR chip mod, and clutch upgrade

Unfortunately, every discussion of Chip Threads degenerates into a slanging match between promoters of a particular product who are too blind to accept that there are lots of similar products on the market and that everyone has the right to make a quid.

Its interesting that no-one has tried more than one kind of chip. They all do very similar things at differing prices. I`d like to see a shootout with 5 identical G0LF 5s at a racetrack with different chips and the STIG, but I`m sure not all the Tuners would agree.

I personally would choose the one with the most informed installer that was geographically convenient for me in case of any issues.

I have had Custom Code on my T4 TDI for a couple of years now and I`m happy, it flies and I have noticed no reliability issues. I have tried no other product, so will not comment on them.

A bit unfair that JMac should be called upon to delete his post as he is affiliated with a chip tuner, whilst WhiteVR6 presents a poll as fact, despite being very closely linked with a well known chip tuner in Sydney.

Interesting that couple of pages into this thread I think I'm actually the only response to the OP who asked specifically for APR owner feedback that:

1. Actually has the APR chip in own his car which is a MK4.
2. Doesn't sell or install another brand.

I did delete the thread on my own accord, tired of the rubbish tagged on to such topics. Should have known better, i wasnt ramming any product, merely adding another Quality product into the mix.

Can anyone point me to any documentation that says nrma wont cover you if you have a ecu upgrade?

last time i was talking to nrm they dont care what you have done to your car as long as its street legal... ie with their new easy choices or whatever you just tell them what year model,engine size etc and the amount to want to insure it for and your all done.

Call them and ask - easiest way to find out.

That said, I'd be surprised if they'd ever figure it out - some of the better known flashes can't even be detected by the dealerships with their software, so how the NRMA would know is beyond me.

That said, I'd not insure with NRMA or AAMI. NRMA will send you to one of their "authorised repair centres" if they can, which are basically exempt from having their work checked by the NRMA after the job is done - they quote low to get the job, and because they often don't do good work in the hope that no-one will pick it until it's too late, you end up with a ****ty repair. I had three repairs go this way before I gave up on them. AAMI aren't so bad, but you get NO choice of repairer at all - you drop the car to them (AAMI), and it vanishes into a big black hole until you get a call to tell you to come pick it up (again, from them) - you never know who's worked on the car, and to me, that's just wrong (I want to see the shop, talk to the guys, and have some level of confidence that they're going to take care of my vehicle whilst it's in their hands).

I found Allianz to be not only cheap (and cheaper if you organise the cover online), but they also allow your choice of repairer. That said, they're not terribly mod friendly (back to the point about whether they could tell if you'd had the car flashed or not...), and Shannons will insure me, include all my mods, allow me choice of repairer, allow me to pay by the month, are track-work friendly, and are cheaper than Allianz - so they're a no brainer for me.

Of course, every person's circumstances are different, and what works for me may not suit you (and vice versa). You need to check with each provider that their product meets your requirements, and then go from there.

Just remember when dealing with insurance matters, they very clearly state you have a duty of disclosure and when it comes to large sums of money like written off cars, you are taking a huge risk by knowingly hiding things if they just decide, for whatever reason, to go looking.

My advice is that if you are like me and enjoy sleeping at night without stuff like that in the back of your mind, ring them and make it clear what you are doing and get it listed and agreed to on your policy, if they won't do it, just go somewhere where you can honestly list all your mods on the policy so all parties are front and centre when and if, the crunch comes.

Give the NRMA a call, I was with them for 20 years and never claimed a cent, but when I called about a chip they said if I went ahead with that they would have to cancel my policy. As stated, they may have changed that now but 2 years ago, I asked to speak to the operator's manager and pleaded my case about being loyal for 2 decades, no claims , got them to look up my history, etc, etc, but at the end of it all it was a simple case of "Computer Says NO!"

Give them a call, and ask about chipping your car and ask for it to be covered and listed on your policy, that's the only way you will know for sure.

Like Manaz, for me Shannon's were happy to discuss all my mods and list everything on the paperwork including ECU chipping.

Snowy makes a bloody good point, and I wasn't clear enough on it in my post - I do NOT, in any way, condone lying to or hiding information from your insurer - doing so is putting you on a path to considerable pain and financial loss.

Aside from the cost (and they're not a great deal cheaper than Allianz, I could live with the extra cost without too much issue), the main reason I moved to Shannons is because I can (and have) list all my mods, and they don't care - some of them may change my premium slightly (by less than $50 a year for what it's worth), but they happily let me list my wheels, brakes, sway bars, haldex controller, and they're all 100% covered, both in terms of being acknowledged by them as being on the car AND for replacement should there be any damage to them in a crash.

I have no plans to lie to my insurance company, i do want to be able to sleep at night lol.

Being under 25 shannons wont touch me, i will give all the insurance company's a ring when i go and buy my gti, i cant see myself chipping the car in the near future but it would be nice to have the option to upgrade the ecu.

I would love to be with shannons but yeah being young sucks also allianz wont touch me, Justcars will, NRMA will and AAMI will so i dunno any other insurance companies that are worth a shot?

Good luck with it mate, don't worry being young only sucks for a while and before you know it you're an old fart like me playing around with a car you wish you had when you were 20.

Seriously though, do some homework and shop around for your insurance. The GTI is a nice little car, but yeah if you're quite young having that turbo is going to cost you $$$ for insurance.
