    golf mk4 alternator help

hey guys, recently ive been having problems with my alternator not charging my battery because i ran my sound system while car was off too many times stupid me i know. I checked how much volts the battery was running on when car was on idle, the battery came up with 16volts that's definitely not right, shouldnt it be like 13volts? anyway it was making noises like a whining noise constantly, i was also getting the battery light on my dash wen i reved the car. Today when i started the car it was running for 2mins and then all i see is smoke coming from the alternator and the noise stopped, i think i blew it? if i did, would i need to buy the exact same alternator to fit my car? or can i use one from a 1.8T, 2.0 etc? my alternator is 90AMPS could i also use a stronger one?

    thanks phil.

You wouldn't need a more powerful alternator. You should get the same one, what engine do you have? The mounts usually vary between engine types. If it was putting out 16volts, you are lucky not to have done any more damage. probably could have saved i with a new regulator. Which would have be a load cheaper than a replacement alternator.
