Unhappy Golf GTI struggling to kick over

    Hi guys,

My Golf GTI is struggling to kick over (got worse all of a sudden) and without getting a scan was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I've replaced the temp sensor about two years ago and more recently a faulty coil pack and the module that sits on the battery. I was thinking it might be the crank sensor so was wondering if this was common to fail and if they're easy to replace.

I'll try get it to Volkspower this week.

    Cheers

Checked the battery? Mine had a huge problem lately even with a less than 2 year old battery. Took it to auto one and yep. It was stuffed.

My '99 GTI also struggles to start sometimes. Does yours turn over easily but not fire up straight away? Or does the starter motor itself turn it over slowly? As BDS says, check out the condition of the battery.

Mine cranks strongly but sometimes takes a couple of seconds to fire up. I replaced the spark plugs with Denso IK22s and cleaned the air filter element, but no improvement. I think it might be a bad coil or the ignition amplifier. Will put in a new fuel filter next, then if that doesn't help, new ignition amplifier and coils.

Hmm just tried starting it again and no go. It just cranks. It did sound weaker so I might check to see if it's the battery.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime ?
If the crank angle /hall sensor is playing up the fuel pump does not prime either.
When mine went the labour cost was $42. So must be fairly easy fix.

Had the speed sensor replaced but that wasn't it so the CAS was replaced but that hasn't fixed it either. Dropping the car back tomorrow so hopefully they can get to the bottom of it.

Had a couple of relays replaced, and fingers crossed, the car continues to start first go. Will see how it goes for another week.

By the way, the guys at Volkspower have been awesome as usual for anyone wanting a place in Melb to take their VAG car.
