very hard to diagnose but try this..idle the engine and get someone to block the tail pipe with a bit of rag and see if you can detect a leak..
Hi there,
I'm experiencing an irritating noise from my Mk4 Golf 2.0 and am trying to source its whereabouts.
On acceleration, it makes a husky/rattly sort of noise instead of a smooth acceleration noise.
It's been like this since I bought it last year, and the mechanic's haven't picked it up during servicing, so it's obviously not a big issue but i'd like to know what could be causing it and would should need replacing.
Exhaust leak? Faulty Cat Converter? Something else?
It's not LOUD like an exhaust leak, it's more an irritating exhaust note that sounds just wrong.
Any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have the same thing on my mk4 2.0. Make it sound a bit like a diesel at idle and then i get a hollow sort of a sound whilst accelerating. Other than making the engine idle a little bit rough, it doesnt seem to affect anything else. I've previously tried blocking the exhaust by hand and attempted to locate the leak but no success so far. Let me know if you have any success.
Yes it's exactly this, a hollow kind of sound while accelerating from a lowish rpm; i'm just not sure whether to take it to an exhaust place or a mechanic or where I should take it too, and if it's going to cost a ton in labor for them to find whats going on.
catylitic converter rattling it sounds like...
