    Gearbox rebuild - rough price

    hi all

basicaly have a few issues with the gearbox in my car, 70k and is already playing up

have had a mechanic look at it and it seems that there is some bearing noise in 1st & 3rd as well as 2nd crunching when changing up gears

hav changed the oil with genuine and readline and neither have made much of ad ifference, so im affraid its down the long and expensive route of freshening it up with new bearings and 2nd syncro

just after an idea on price of what people have paid for this sort of work in the past - have been quoted anywhere between $1,200 and $3,000 to fix

also looking at sourcing a second hand one, although that way of course runs the risk of running into the same problems later on

    any advice appreciated

posted this on the ''noisy reverse thread''

Wish my noise was only a minor issue, had two teeth come of the reverse gear about a month or so ago (rivets being the cause) which then caused other parts (bearings) to S**t them selves wasn't a cheap fix however compared to other gear box stories I've heard I don't think mine was that bad, including a clutch kit it was $2600 in total - having said that the guy @ VOLKSHOME seemed quite genuine and honest (think his name was JOHN) ...............

hopefuly your noise doesn't end up being that serious (mine was more of a cluncking sound though)

Mine is a 1.6l so not sure if yours will be the same but apparently they used rivets rather than bolts for the drive gears (something like that) and they eventually wear and the head of the rivet flicks off and jams in between the gears.

If you source a second hand one from your year range your more than likely going to be confronted with the same problem, I bit the bullet and yeah paid as stated above and was told mine wasn't the worse case they had seen..........

I had a 2003 Mk4 GTI box here that broke the thrust washer behind the pinion. It was noisy in all gears. Parts were cheap but it was labour intensive. The second gear syncro is a 2 piece unit and not usually a problem. Until it is disassembled it is hard to say what your problem is. I would be suspicious of the thrust washer, which is the same washer as in most of the other boxes.

golflaki, the rivets going in the DUU 1.6 boxes are a very common problem. By the sounds of it, you were lucky as 99% of the time they poke a hole in the housing and stop!!!!
Cheers, and good luck with it,

sounds like a really good price - I do know a few of my gears and from memory the idler had to be replaced, like it's been said though I think it has to be pulled apart to diagnose correctly - some I have heard have been beyond repair.........

Bit of a hike from where you are though.. i got it through my mates workshop in Warilla,( Wollongong NSW) and he sent it to a place in Industrial Road, Oak Flats.

The price was kind of mates rates and all up with the clutch i paid $2600 (1700 for re build + 900 for clutch, labour and a new set of pads too and gearbox oil changed after RUN IN period)

Originally i got quoted only $900 to rebuild the box, which i thought was a bargain, but once it was opened up and inspected, they quickly realised it was going to be alot more work then expected ( diff was buggered too )

    Hi, first post here.

My 2000 1.6 Golf recently busted 2nd gear and thanks to this forum I had it sent to Volkwerke in Greensborough. To be honest, I had no idea who to send it to, and after ringing a few dealers and the rough quotes they gave me which were , I decided to ring the places mentioned in this forum. Anyway, after speaking to a few places, Loyd at Volkwerke gave me the greatest confidence. He was a complete gentleman, honest and knew his stuff.

Anyway, picked it up today after the rebuild and she is all good again. Had the usual popped rivet, busted tooth on crown gear as well as chipped tooth on input shaft (causing 2nd gear woes). Total cost was $2450. Not too bad IMHO. Fingers crossed she'll be good for many years to come.

Thumbs up to Volkwerke and Loyd

im on my 3rd box. i smashed one flat shifting, smashed one rippin skids and both times they blew holes in the casing. Havent had any issues with this one but might pull it out and send it away to have the rivets replaced with bolts.

I got all my gearboxes under warranty too!
