    Gearbox chatter

When i start the car cold the gearbox makes a chatter sound....... if you depress the clutch pedal then the sound goes away.
To me this sounds like an imput shaft bearing is stuffed but a few people that have listened to it say that its either gearbox back lash and thats normal or its a VW box and they all make that sound ?
I have had a listen to Blitzens car and if you listen really carfully you can hear a similar sound but nothing near as audible as mine. It dosnt have a dual mass flywheel anymore as i was told this will make it louder although once the box warms up the sound level decreases.
No gears crunch, easy to shift just a concern something might get worse.

If the sound goes away when you depress the clutch then I would be more inclined to think it could be associated with your clutch pressure plate or even a thrust (throw out) or spindle bearing.

Pretty sure it's the thrust bearing, my car does the same.
Did it when I bought it, still does it with a new clutch, flywheel and bearing.

The throw out bearing isnt in operation until you press the clutch pedal so when they are shaged symtoms are the other way round ie. no sound then when you press pedal it makes a bad noise.

Mine wasn't like that mate, mine made your sound (cold and hot...) when my clutch was OUT. It was diagnosed as a buggered thrust so I replaced it and the clutch, and the noise went right away.

    My money's on throw-out.

Yes its an ecs vr6 clutch and fly wheel and i was told that this would make a bit on noise ...... I do have a replacement bearing and the sleve it sits on just not wanting to pull the box out untill im 110% sure thats what it is.

The trouble with a throw out bearing is that I'm pretty sure you'll find that if they've got a bit of play in them they will still chatter or rattle even before you depress the clutch and will normally quieten down a bit once they warm up.
