Fuel Pump Sender / Fuel Smell

    Hi folks,
Had the fuel smell coming from the back seat the other day, I popped the cover and noted the puddle of fuel on top of the sender. I was informed the sender had cracked due to wear and tear. However I have not seen any posts to support this, the only posts I saw were that the rubber connectors could wear out over time, lose their seal.

I wanted to know if this was a legit statement, i.e. can the sender wearout due to constant pressure changes in the tank, similar to the radiator expansion and contraction. Logically I say ok but as said, I have not seen this reasoning posted anywhere. Lastly, would replacing the sender improve fuel efficiency?

    cheers

never seen one cracked. Theyre made from pretty thick plastic.
I have seen a few leaky ones from the rubber seal not being seated properly when re-assembled though.

Indeed, the inlet where the seal would be is what I knew of as well. I am not convinced the plastic failed, they gave me the old one as a measure to convince me otherwise but I'm sorry, I feel like I've been done again, I sadly cannot recommend a single mechanic in Sydney for VW work.

...and to close this off I sold my car after spending about 7k on it in repairs, the mk4 is pathetic on electrics and 'parts that last', very happy with my 5 year old Honda Jazz VTIS.
