    Thumbs down Engine Trouble :(

    Guys,

The Golf was giving me a bit of trouble on Friday when I last drove it. I've booked it in to get looked at next Monday but I wanted to ask around and see if anyone wants to have a guess at what's wrong...so I can work out how much it might set me back. Car is a Mk4 GTI.

Basically I was driving to work on Friday, accelerating normally out to merge and the car was not real happy about it. Hard to describe but it was like the turbo was cutting in and out. Boost gauge was reading 5 or 6psi, and then it would drop right back and the car would slow down then pick back up again. Happened 2 or 3 times in quite a short space of time. So I backed right off and nursed it to work. On the drive home from work, nursing it along it was really shuddering when I pulled up at the lights a couple of times. It didn't feel or sound like it was going to stall but it was a lot shakier than it's ever been since I owned it.

Dunno if any of that is helpful, if you've got questions I'll do my best to answer them. Any ideas/comments are appreciated, the car's coming up to 180k kms so I'm due for a timing belt change which is gonna set me back a bit as it is so I'm just crossing my fingers this is a minor problem.

    Thanks again,

    Alex

I would check a few of your vacuum hoses as they are very common to break and become brittle on the mk4's.

    ■ check vacuum hose on diverter valve
    ■ check diverter valve if its stock as they tend also to fail and break on top where vacuum hose goes into
    ■ check vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator (near intake manifold)
    ■ scan your car with vagcom and that'll definitely tell you most errors or whats happening at least to cause.

thats the most common thing to happen

do you have any mods on the car?
    What’s behind you doesn’t matter..

Yeh car's running a K04, chip, different DV...those are the most relevant mods.

I'll check all the hosing when I get home.

    Thanks

Sounds like limp mode. Vagcom will help you diagnose.

Who did you book the car into?
Either Peter at CVWC Belconnen or Michael at CVWC Tuggeranong would be your best bet.

Pete at Belco did most of the work to the car, he's taking a look at it for me.

fuzion was right, in this case it was the diverter valve. Put a new N75 in there and that fixed it right up.
