Penrite HPR5 is what I'd recommend.
They tend to drink the 5W30.
Hi,
Just purchased a VW Golf Sport 2.0 ltr 2003.
It has done 215000 klms and I have worked out that specs recommend 5W 30 engine oil.
Should I stick to that spec or move to another due to the high klms, also can I put synthetic oil in or do I need to be cautious on what I use.
There is no service book with the car so I am replacing timing belt/ water pump and giving it a service so at least I have a starting point with servicing etc.
Many thanks.

Tbh I have been using 5w30 for the last 70k and I have never experienced excess consumption. I'm at 210k now, but I might try 5w40 next time.
Castrol 5w30 is always on sale for such a cheap price.

I used to run my ex-wife's one on 504/507, because free at the time.
It wouldn't get to 15K, without needing a litre or so to top it up. That was a relatively low-mileage car, too. However, it was mostly highway driving.

Oh sorry I didn't read closely, this thread is a 2ltr golf. I was referring to the GTI and I changed oil every 10k at the max.

Thanks All,
I ended up purchasing 5w30 Shell Helix HX8. The guys at the auto shop suggested that I increase the weight to 10w40,due to the klms it has done, so I will try the 5w30 and keep an eye on the usage. Thank you for your input.
^ Thats exactly what I am doing. HX8 is $45 at vw502/505 approved. Mine is on 173k

All seems good with the HX8 since putting it in. Penrite Enviro 5w40 was on special the other day so purchased 5 ltrs for next service, hopefully it might quieten down noisy lifter.
