yep, getting paying that 3K extra and getting a GTI, would be cheaper than getting a wreck and swapping stuff over. And your conversion wouldn't be nearly as good as the it came from factory.

It would cost you nearly 6g to buy the wreck and swap it over... And even then you would still have a 1.6L with a 1.8t engine for the same price it would cost for a decent GTI...
Up to you though, it's your cash.

i know im being difficult lol but i love my little car and i've already got the exhaust, cai and swaybars and bushes done
i was hoping to keep it, its a metallic green which i love the colour
Hard to get more power from the 1.6, as the car it is pulling is heavy. Pointless too, as the gearboxes all explode.
However, the Mk4 is not that hard to do a conversion on.
If you got a smashed GTI, you only need to plug in the engine harness from the ecu in the raintray to make the engine run.
The way the Mk4 immobilizer works is the coded key sends a signal to the immobilizer in the cluster, which then sends a yes signal to the ecu.
Thus, you dont even need to take your dash out, just drop the front engine cradle, complete with all the brakes and suspension from both cars, bolt the GTI one into your car and plug it in.
You should also do the back axle and the exhaust. Thats it.
You may be missing a few GTI features on the stalks or dash, but either dont care, or get into wiring swop overs.
I have a penchant for Green Cars, be good to see a different coloured GTI thats not silver or black.
You could do the same thing with a V5 or V6 Bora, although you would need to make the 4mo gearbox into a 2wd.
Be good to not build a car that you can buy.
Any of these swops in NSW would not need engineering, as they came in that model car, just change the engine number and capacity with the authorities and carry on.
Technically you could leave the car with tiny brakes and a big engine and not be braking the law, but you would die!
You can get a bit of money back after the swop by selling your engine and gearbox.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hmmm, interesting info Loon because I'm thinking of the same thing about my 1.6. Bar the seats and MAYBE cruise, everything else in the GTi doesn't really appeal to me. I had a sunroof in my last car and really don't want another one, leather is more hastle to me than cloth and all the extra gizmos just add weight. PLUS, I already have my suspension set up, wheels and tires, my 312mm brakes fitted and I too like the metallic green colour.
Out of interest, what would you charge for a GTi gearbox and engine? And why would the rear axle need swapping?

Thanks loon for that info,
Does anybody know if the gearboxes are different from 1.6 to 1.8T engines? i just spent $3000 on getting a 2nd hand gearbox and had it strenghtened.
The GTI were manual only,
Mine's a manual, i dont like automatics much lol
