i had the same problem with my golf,
its the engine temp sensor, it wont let the car start if it thinks its too hot
hey
i have a 2001 1.6 golf. i was sitting at the traffic lights the other day (engine was at normal temp) and the engine stopped, tried to start it up and and it took a wile to start. i got it going and headed for home then the engine started idling at 1500-2000.
when the engine is cold it runs fine, just starts a bit after it gets to operating temp.
any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like Crank Angle Sensor is going, Same problems When mine was failing, Get it scanned And see what codes pop up. Crank Angle sensor cost me like 200 bucks or something, Bit pricey :S
Mate i have that issue before... Check your Air MAF.

looks like it could be a few things!!
Just get it scanned, each of these sensors should throw a code if they are faulty

Yep the 1.6 is really common for crank sensors. Best tool in my van at the moment is first aid burn spray!!!! i kept a T4 transporter running with it!!!!!!! Great tool for diagnosing bad hot sensors. it will make the car cut out more than a temp sensor. Temp sensor will make it run extra rich as the "dumb" ecu doesnt know how hot the engine is. If the temp sensor tells the ecu its cold then guess what it gets flooded with fuel and up goes the consumption, will more thank likely still run though.
