Okay the coolant fan fuse is missing and the socket is slightly melted but the fan works. My problem is when I turn the aircon on the compressor doesn't turn on. Any ideas. The light in the button comes on.
does a diagram exist of the fuse box to tell you what each fuse is for.

The big fuse is for the high speed fan.
The low speed fan fuse is one of the 3 little ones that are also in that fusebox on the battery (S180).
The big one also powers up the fan control module that controls the a/c operation.

PM if you are looking for: R32 rear sway bar; R32 suspension springs; Euro Headlight switches
Replace the fusebox, but feelings are the big fan is on its way out. Common im afraid

Apart from the missing fuse it looks fine. Can't find anything obvious wrong, there isnt any power going to the compressor though. Apart from the fuses anything common go wrong with the air con?
The power for the compressor comes from the fan control module...which doesn't have a fuse at the moment.
The low speed fan has a feed from the fan control module (to turn on low speed when the ac is on), but there is also a direct feed from the small fuse to the low speed fan through the radiator temp switch.

30 amp fuse on the battery fuse ox does house the feed for the zircon. There should be no missing fuses in that block. Also no fans no aircon. Their job is to cool the condenser , temp and pressure is related. High temp high pressure. High pressure kicks in and keeps the compressor off. To the top no fuses should be missing from that block.

ok fuse replaced and still not aircon, i directly hooked the compressor to the batery and it works and its ice cold. i should probably mention that the ac switch in the dash was broken and it wasnt pushing the little switch inside the climate control unit so i got a screw driver and pushed the pin so the ac light is on in the button, does that mean that the air con is turned on or just that the light works. i have also noticed a nice chunk of red elecy tape on alot of the wiring in the dash and under the bonnet im guessing this isnt normal.
Absolutely not normal mate. If you have powered up the AC then you have already tested the system integrity, all good. You will have to check you power output from your switch and travel from there. Just fixed one last week and all of the wiring was complete, but found a scorched plug which created too much resistance therefore no power. I deleted the plug and hardwired, now all good. i know its frustrating, but i actually enjoy it, sorry its not helping you now, but you will need to start from the source, ie power switch, fans then come on then track from there

Do you know of any beetle wrecks around that I could get the climate controls out of? The switch is broken so I have to replace it anyway. I removed some random wires that were attempted to be soldered to the stereo wiring. Just fell straight off in my hand. Is there normally a fuseable link straight from the battery to the fused side of the fuse box? Well I spose a second one would be more accurate. It's a yellow wire with a screw together fuse holder
