It is, but in a car with 99kw at all 4 wheels it really doesn't need one, maybe a fwd definitely but these cars barely need it unless you're going FI imo...

Nice to have but unneccesary, save the money and get some proper quality tires instead...

However, as Golf Houso has pointed out, whether you'd see any real benefit (particularly when compared to the cost) may be something you need to consider. In the dry, unless you're regularly doing high-rpm clutch-dumping takeoffs, you're probably not going to benefit too much. In the wet, you'd probably see more benefit in terms of giving you a cleaner take-off from standstill.
I thought an LSD helps on cornering too, prevents the losing power through the lighter inside wheel slipping.

The item on sale @ ECS Tuning is for the 5-speed 02J, as fitted to FWD vehicles. Maybe definitely!

Good tyres is a good piece of advice though. Too many people buy big wheels and then can't afford anything other than cheap tyres, and wonder why they slide around/spin up a wheel when trying to put power down in the wet...

Very true. Though if you're cornering that hard on public roads...

Perfect for the track in that instance. One way that the R32 and Bora V6 4Motion benefit here is that if slip's detected, power gets sent rearwards, which gives a net power reduction per front wheel, stopping the inside wheel lighting up.

    *cough*

I do find I get the front wheels scrabbling for grip but then my tyres are not great. Will look at getting 17's with some 225/45 rubber before spending money on something like this.

OK, rub it in, I could only afford a V5 at this stage.

Do yourself a favour when you upgrade, go with 17x7.5 wheels, and through 235/45R17 tyres on - much cheaper in that size, and you'll actually correct your speedo a little.

There's nothing to be ashamed of there. 125kW/220Nm through the front wheels, that's more in both regards than a stock GTI of the same era!

So am I correct assuming that all Aus delivered golfs have the 114mm ring gear (as there are 114 and 113mm versions)? It's nice this comes up, on my way to uni this morning it was an intersting affair taking off in the morning rain, wheels spun without even trying (Falken FK452 ~1000km) and I'm upgrading to a K04 soon. Is there a significant difference between the Quaife and the Peliquin? I know they both have Q in their names...

Very good question on the ring gear - one of the workshop guys (Golf_Loon, JMac, Bug_Racer, etc) may be able to answer that.

Peloquin have the following pages up for their 02J diffs (the first is the 114mm ring gear version, the 2nd is the 113mm ring gear version)

    Peloquin Transaxles
    Peloquin Transaxles

From those pages, the Bora V5 uses the 113mm ring gear version of the gearbox, and thus this deal won't suit them.

Regarding differences between Quaife and Peloquin, I believe they're both gear-style LSDs, and so don't have clutch-packs that wear out and need periodic maintenance. Gear-based diffs are also smoother in operation than clutch-plate designs, as they "come on" more gradually, whereas plate-style diffs can come on very suddenly and feel like they're snatching.

Peloquin do front and rear diffs for the R32/4Motion, but Quaife only do the front diff for these it seems.

Another alternative is Wavetrac - their product is also available for the 02J 5-speed gearboxes, but unfortunately not for the AWD 02M gearboxes (otherwise I'd potentially have one).

I just sent ECS an email with my vin. Another thing to consider is that the Quaife doesn't come with an install kit whereas the Preloquin does, so you can add $85US for ARP bolts plus whatever else you need and with the crap Aus $ it comes in at just under a grand to my door...

that'd be tempting, i'd put one in at the same time i refurbed my gearbox, because my gearbox is really starting too get notchy and hard to get through the gates or however they work. It's like my selector fork has gone all wobbily.

i wonder how much a gearbox refurb and install of this bad boy would cost...
